Drought under the wear of prosperity(Repost)

An infant calf gasps for air and sustenance some 20 minutes after joining a desperate world at Dida Yabelo village in Borana zone, Oromia. The mother of the calf is unable to stand on her feet; its legs sharply jutting out of its haunches and shoulders. She tries to nuzzle the baby but she can’t. Unable to suckle milk and too young to feed on a forage, grass or anything else, the future of the calf looks bleak.

The image magnified the horror we felt seeing decaying carcasses at every turn along the Hawassa-Borana road as we travelled to one of the driest regions of Ethiopia last in 2015 along with my BBC collegues.My colleague, Amensisa Ifa, a prominent cameraman for BBC Africa, couldn't hold his emotions and broke into tears after seeing the calf struggle for life.

“I will slaughter the calf to save the mother,” the owner of the cattle, Dhakii, told us in a mournful voice. “Who knows...my childrens could be the next".The Borana is among the hardest hit by drought this year. The landscape here, some 590kms south of Addis Ababa, is quite different from the cooler and humid Ethiopian highlands. The heat is harsh, no grass in plain sight, and pastoralists travel with their cattle for three to four days at a time to access water.

Among the Borana, cattle is not only possession but also a sign of power and social status. The average family used to own at least 300 heads of cattle. A thousand is not unusual in Borana and anyone with less than 20 heads of cattle is considered poor, requiring a loan in the form of Busa Gonofa from his clansmen. A man without cattle is called “Qolle guutu hiikhan,'' meaning a destitute whose hair (afro) is unbraided. Such a person cannot perform his social obligations and participate in some rituals.
