Congratulations to for winning the Best Cinematographer Award for IN MY HAND at 💖💖💖✨🎥

The Jury statement:

“The film tells a strong story through a suggestive and evocative idiom. The images allow us to enter the main character’s experiences and emotions. Magnificent natural images make the landscape present, and the poetic depiction of the main character’s experiences unites the dreamlike with the real in a beautiful and brutal way. The photography in the film is both powerful and sensual, while at the same time conveying the culture and historical experiences of the Sámi people. The award for best photography in a film under 60 minutes goes to
Mauri Lähdesmäki for Mu giedas – In My Hand.”

In My Hand is a documentary by Sámi directors (Finland) and (Sweden). It tells the story of the Sámi struggle on both a personal and historical level. The main character is Niillas Somby, a Sámi who is facing a 21-year prison sentence for attempted sabotage.

For six days, Sundsvall is filled with films from all over the world, meetings between audiences and filmmakers, seminars, concerts and festivities.

Two of our films - “Áfruvvá – Mermaid” and “In My Hand” are seen in the exhibiton in rare immersive multichannel, panoramic format. ✨

Subjects of the Water is a group exhibition by five artists that features four panoramic films. Installed in the space as immersive multichannel works, the films are presented as a 43-minute screening beginning on the hour.

The theme of the exhibition is water and its connection to Sámi nature, mental landscapes, livelihoods, activism, and storytelling.

In the films, the Arctic nature of Sápmi unfolds in all its beauty and drama. The screening space features a wide semi-circular screen. Sámi artists appearing in the films include writer, musician Niillas Holmberg, *livđe artist Anna Morottaja, and artists, activists Niillas Somby and Mihkkal Hætta. The exhibition also features sculptures by artist Miina Kujala related to the world of the film Áfruvvá, as well as a risku – a Sámi brooch – made from recycled materials by Tiina Arkko (OZ Jewel).

Great news ‼️ IN MY HAND has won The Moving People and Images Award at 🥰💥

The Moving People and Images Award was granted to Marja Helander and Liselotte Wajstedt for their film In My Hand. The jury praised the visual artistry that highlighted an important story—one that must be seen and shared with new audiences. Established in 2021, the €1500 prize is awarded to a director whose work recognizes inclusivity and diversity, sponsored by the Finnish Film Foundation. Filmmaker Erol Mintaş served as an advisor in the jury’s selection of the winner.

National Competition showcased the best of Finnish short filmmaking as part of the ongoing Love & Anarchy Festival. The jury that selected the winners consisted of writer Maryan Abdulkarim, the first international member in the competition’s history, AGORA industry representative Angeliki Vergou, and Leena Närekangas, the Executive Director of the ELKE association that runs Cinema Orion in Helsinki.

Our documentary film ”Passu” is playing tonight at ’s DIASPORA SCREENING.

This screening is part of Nomads Festival 2025 program, in collaboration with .

The event will take place at the warm and welcoming Gold Café in Puhos, Itäkeskus, a space renowned for its unique atmosphere, excellent food, and, of course, sh**ha. In our event, cinema is not only watched but lived, shared, tasted, and felt as an ongoing dialogue about belonging, remembering, and the experience of displacement.

Main film: Passu

Just 18 years old, Passu is already an activist, podcaster, and vice president of the Finnish Feminist Party. She was born into a Uyghur family, a Turkic-speaking ethnic group of I Islamic faith living in northwestern China, and her political struggle is intertwined with the pain of repression in China and separation from her loved ones. The documentary follows her daily life, which is filled with social activism, school, and new political challenges. Her thoughts and dreams emerge from her social media channels. The film recounts the strength and contradictions of someone who, while still very young, is trying to change the world without losing herself, with effort and hope.
