We had an honor to meet Swedish Ambassador to Finland, Peter Ericson, and interviewing him for the podcast ”Mitä Suomi voisi oppia?”.
The interview was conducted at the Swedish Embassy, which is located on the edge of the Market Square, between the City Hall and the Presidential Palace. The building was built in 1839–1843 and in 1921 the Swedish state bought it for 400,000 kronor as its embassy. A magnificent building full of spectacular paintings and interior designs that match different eras.
Peter Ericson has a long and varied career at the heart of diplomacy, and he knows not only the relations between Finland and Sweden, but also the wider field of European and international politics.
We discuss, among other things, the differences between Sweden and Finland in economic thinking, the role of culture in society, mental landscape and decision-making – and the role of innovation and startup entrepreneurship in Sweden’s success story. We also talk about how Ericson himself ended up in a diplomatic career and what it’s like to serve as an ambassador in a country that is in many ways both very close - and interestingly different.
