Deadcitymonkeys’ single This Day receives great feedback in Whiskey Club’s review.
We recommend following their page and, of course, checking out the This Day single if, to your shame, you haven’t done so yet!

"An insistent bass line introduces “This Day” from Deadcitymonkeys, dark and heavy but fizzing with energy and accompanied by just a lone hi-hat. Then, as the drums build, a crunchy guitar riff seems to clarify the intentions; there’s a slight bend into the flat second, giving everything a Phrygian feel. The intensity builds until a perfect drum fill leads us into the verse with a tribal beat and a punk vocal, with the chord changes after “looking for a fight” settling your mind further into that exotic modal darkness. But wait, the pre-chorus has more of a metal-style voice, and after the first hint of a guttural growl, the chorus explodes into life with soaring harmonised vocals, and you’ll find yourself more firmly in metal territory. These guys just know how to turn the power up and down, how to vary light and dark textures; sure, this is a heavy song overall, but it’s a well-constructed journey that keeps you locked in every beat of the way. You’ll just want a great guitar solo in the mix somewhere, and of course, this is delivered in spades too. It’s an absolute blast this, and one of the best examples of finding a sweet spot between punk and metal."

We start this week’s “Indie Music From The Top Shelf” from Whiskey’n’Whiskers on a note of beautiful, uplifting serenity courtesy of Lennon Fitzgerald , whose latest song “Wilted Flower” is an absolute stunner. Does any song need anything but a simple acoustic set to be a winner, if that gorgeous vocal is floating through the mix? Probably not, but the song itself in this case is equally special. The haunting melody is emphasised by the vocal tone, of course, but it’s the melody itself that creates that wonderful tension, leaning repeatedly into that C # which is used so intently when it is not a chord tone forming 9ths (and briefly b5ths) against those soft chords. It’s all so delightfully unsettling and the orchestration fits that so perfectly, making a kind of shoegaze vibe but over a soft rock beat; it’s quite a unique sound. The lyrics talk about not giving up at your lowest points and to the power of people who really care to lift you up, and though the music softly fades out on a minor chord, leaving you wanting more, there’s an implied resolution to a brighter parallel major and a happy ending, if you want to hear it. Co-incidence, or a deliberate musical reflection on the lyrics? One of our favourite songs of late, this.

Hitting the adrenaline button hard now, we have “Discocaine” from Bearded Chieftains. If you don’t know what to expect, the intro will keep you guessing a while, but as soon as that tasty guitar motif kicks in, you’ll know that you are heading to funk territory - confirmed by the coolest rhythm guitar work and snappy melodic bass lines as the vocal takes over the verse. It’s such a polished vocal too, giving the song that kind of ’Steely Dan’ sophistication and, listen closely, you might get a strong jazz feel too, because either context for the melody and the changes fits squarely into the jazz domain, at least to my ears, and it’s just delicious. But wait, this thing rocks too; the drums in particular hit really hard. Then there’s the spice and attitude, and the humour in the way that lines like “Jimmy just a wanna-be” are delivered so that they sound disco-like but intentionally ironic. It’s a masterpiece of funky, rocking, jazzy, feel-good, danceability and we can’t get enough. This one was released in September of last year and the bio describes it as the title track of a forthcoming album… We live in hope.

“We are something loud”. It’s a phrase that I don’t believe I ever heard before we heard it from The Deader End. We featured “Something Loud” at the end of October last year and thrilled in a pacy dynamic rock song, in which that phrase seemed to talk of getting to the end of the working week and preparing to paint the town red at the weekend. But lately “SOMETHING LOUD(Acoustic)”, their latest release leaves me bewildered and delighted in equal measure. This has the same lyric but slower. The acoustic setting reveals the beautiful melody and the wistful progression to the full. The vocal is characterful, rich and haunting with very subtle harmonies just adding a touch of interest. The guitar and string tones (probably Cello) are natural and resonant. But those lyrics now hit me hard with a different meaning. Being “something loud” now seems to talk of having reached a place where two people are stronger together than apart and radiate that bond for all to see. Can the lyric have two meanings? To me, this is a profoundly beautiful love song. Maybe to you it is something else? Whatever it communicates though - it does communicate. This is art.

Every week we bring back a song featured exactly a year ago as the ‘Timeless Classic’ and this week ‘I’ll Kill Us All’ from Dashing Skull Club is an easy choice, because what better example of a classic could there be? It happens every time, after the cats and cuckoo clocks and that snappy bass line, with just a hint of fret buzz…. those three chords. Simple enough, root at the top but they make time stand still and put a grin on my face because I know what’s coming. Maybe it’s the tone that makes that intro so special, or the way they hit the off-beats with such relish that cuts the mustard - I dunno but it sets the stage for classic Dashing Skull Club... Playful lyrics, cool whimsical vocals, humour, harmonised guitars, massive walls of grungy orchestral style breaks, skilled musicianship - this has it all. Such attention to detail too: Have you noticed that the clock ticking in the intro is at the tempo of the song to come, for example? Ah, you’ve to dig deep to fully understand the magnificence of these guys. Brilliant stuff.

In the sunshine, listening to a stunning song, and I don’t care how the neighbours feel about me belting out “born with your daddy’s money” at the top of my voice, because it just feels great to be alive. Music can do that for you. We fell for Kaylee Jordan Music’s oeuvre through her vocal on “I Don’t Need Your Diamond Ring” that led us to her own catalog with great songs like “Hillbilly Gypsy Queen”. Seriously, does anyone else do country with such a powerful voice and that swagger and sassiness… Shania Twain maybe? The latest song though, takes things up a level again because ‘Cowboy Wannabe’ is a masterpiece. It’s country but it seriously rocks and its bluesy too… it’s even laugh out loud funny at times. The vocal is off the scale, the hooks unforgettable and the performance is proof that ‘A players’ attract ‘A players’ because this song features exceptional musicians. The rhythms are clockwork tight, the tones glorious, the melody on the turnaround at the end of that guitar solo so tasty and my god that drummer… the fills are mind-blowing and what about that crescendo in the outro? Roller coaster thrill levels.

We’ve been spending quite some listening time lately with Jā-WrK’s June release “One Day At A Time”. It’s one of those triumphant, feel-good songs that’s hard to resist joining in with. It’s Jā-Wrk, so the rhythm and flow are impeccable and the voice is rich and clear, powerful and emphatic without ever being harsh. Over straight rap, it feels like he is keenly aware of the progression, without tracking it melodically, and it’s such a cool progression; sequenced this way, it’s unusual and it just wants to cycle forever - perfect for this song. Then there are times when he calls for melody, such as at 0:48 and again a minute later, but avoids the RnB style handover to a more explicit melodic break; it’s subtle, masterful variation. The beat is cool, but that bass line wins the prize for driving the rhythm, and the song is packed with great production work like those delightful melodic vocal figures that flow around the lead vocal in more of a female vox range. The lyrical message is all about knowing that the singer is going to make it. The brilliant “Made For This”, of course, carried the same message as if addressing doubters and it had a strong defiant tone. This song, though softer, feels even more confident, full of personal self-assured positivity… and with music like this, it is very much well placed.

The next song represents everything that keeps us listening to indie music. It’s the latest from The The Exceptional Mr Hyde “I’m not the Same Guy” and - am I allowed to say it’s ’exceptional’? - because it truly is. Those deep, dark tones are there. The post-punk tones are there, the dark wave vibes and the sense of angst you get from Joy Division… but this is a blues song from start to finish. Try comping it, if you don’t believe me. You’ll quickly fall into a i/iv/v in A minor and you’ll use a minor blues scale for fills, actually just like that cool guitar solo uses. Really - do it if you have an instrument to hand, because it’s a joy to join in with that dark, haunting vocal, the kick-ass drums and those perfect clean bass and guitar tones. Does this have you thinking of Nick Cave? Anyway, those lyrics!!! This is poetry. The CliffsNotes are - a guy nearly dies, gets to the pearly gates, god wants to play the shell game to see if he gets in, the devil sends for the scales to weigh his heart against Ma’at’s feather, it’s a close call so he snaps back to consciousness. It’s brilliant; humorous too, and the language used is just exquisite. And to cap it all just check the artwork with Osiris and the scales. Who puts this level of thought and detail into their art?… Only the best Indie artists.

An insistent bass line introduces “This Day” from Deadcitymonkeys, dark and heavy but fizzing with energy and accompanied by just a lone hi-hat. It’s an absolute blast this, and one of the best examples of finding a sweet spot between punk and metal.

After that high-octane blast, how about a Swedish massage to slow down time and calm the soul? “The Boat on the River” from the latest Dreyful EP, ‘Sutton’, is a chance to step inside the wonderful sonic landscape of Dreyful and marvel at just how beautiful the surroundings are. What about that voice? I can’t hear harmonies or double tracking, but the voice reminds me of Simon & Garfunkel singing Scarborough Fair when they are in close harmony. The sound is folky, but the melody feels like it leans into jazz or progressive rock. It doesn’t set out to be full of hooks, but it ebbs and flows in such a memorable way. I can’t hear into string-instrument chords so well, but it feels like a repeated I,vi,ii,V turnaround with the V chord voiced as a major 6th making the resolution back to the I chord feel like a warm bath, yet the extensions in the pre-chorus add some delicious spice too. Whatever he is doing, it just pulls me in. The orchestration helps; gentle guitars (&/or mandolin?), violin, flute, and a surprisingly energetic bass line that propels the journey along. And it is a sweet journey, telling the tale of having gotten over life’s doubts and looking back confidently, all told in such wonderful poetic language. We like this - a lot.

If you are not yet a Birdy Young fan, that’s all about to change when you listen to “Gettin’ Lazy”. The intro is putting you in the mood for an upbeat country-rock song, and when the first verse lands into an airy acoustic mix with just voice and guitar, you’ll know that you are being prepared for something special. You will surely take time to marvel at the purity of that voice, with a timbre and phrasing that is perfect for modern country. The pre-chorus with that driving kick drum leads through a crescendo that promises a hell of a chorus…. It delivers one too, but where are we now? I’m hearing country and rock and pop and I’m feeling a strong urban vibe too - all at once. It’s an extraordinary fusion of styles, and by the time we get to the second verse, there are subtle electronic beats joining in too. Yet, before that powerful outro, we get a great guitar solo that would grace any powerful rock song. What a brilliant, masterfully woven, tapestry this song delivers. It’s so singable too, the anthemic ‘it’s the weekend, time to let your hair down and forget the working grind’ chorus just cannot be denied. I cannot imagine any radio station producer hearing this and not wanting to program it. If, at my advanced age, I might be allowed to say so - this is fresh!

We always try to pull something special out of the bag for the closing song, and this week I think we may have hit a new high. See, I grew up alternating mostly between Prog & Classical, and I get why ‘they don’t write ‘em like when I were a lad’. It’s a challenge to explore themes and use forms that require repeated listening to appreciate everything that’s going on, when you are trying to write a song of modern length - 4 minutes or so. It is possible though; just wrap your ears around “After Light” by The Fortunate Tragedy (SixSeraphim Records). The tension will grab your attention in that intro as the changes descend a couple of times from the tonic of the minor scale and then move upwards freely using both natural and harmonic to wring the maximum ‘wow’ out of the 7th degree being flat or raised. And just at that peak frisson of excitement, you are dropped instantly into a soft, dreamy “I Talk to the Wind” kind of soundscape with ethereal guitar tones and resonant vocal harmonies. The saturated guitar figures that take over drop you into an epic virtuoso lead guitar solo… and so it continues; a series of movements, modulations, and variations that fit together so organically, often surprising but always feeling inevitably correct. This is the kind of indie music that preserves one’s faith in the creative potential of the Indie scene.

Thank you to these artists for keeping the spirit of independent artistry vital with their music. Please do listen to the playlist, support all of the artists, maybe find some new favourites and, most of all, enjoy the music ❤️
