“We can’t be friends” isn’t coming from a place of anger—it’s coming from clarity. Some connections, no matter how much history or emotion is involved, start to drain more than they give. I’ve learned that keeping people around just because they’ve been there isn't reason enough when respect, trust, or peace is no longer mutual. Letting go doesn’t mean I don’t care; it means I finally care enough about myself to walk away from what no longer feels right.

Friendship should feel safe, honest, and balanced—not like a constant guessing game or quiet competition. If I have to question where I stand, hide how I feel, or shrink who I am, then that’s not real friendship. So no, we can’t be friends—not out of bitterness, but out of self-respect. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is release someone with love and keep walking forward, even if it hurts.

People will point out how you act different without ever asking what led you there. They notice your silence, your distance, your shift, but never the words or actions that made you feel unwelcome or unvalued. It’s easier for them to blame your change than to take a look at what they did to cause it.

It hurts when you’re forced to protect your peace in ways others don’t understand. But you learn that your growth won’t always be seen or respected by those who once had full access to you. And that’s okay. Protecting yourself doesn’t need permission.
