Maggots: Original Artyfacts From the First Finnish Death Metal Era Part II

⚫️ Rare Finnish death metal 7” box set series’ part II with Xysma, Funebre & Interment out in September

The first chapter of the Maggots box set series ended in 1992. Now for the second part, we return to the very core of the Finnish death metal underground in three chapters.

Xysma is certainly one of the best-known cult-status bands from Finland, and they ground the hell out of the underground scene before changing their style to a more rock-oriented direction. Once again, we thank Steve O’Bannon of Seraphic Decay Records for the 1990 release of Fata Morgana 7”. This must be the most legendary Xysma release ever, where their trademark groovy, doomy, chaotic grindcore and rocking vibes blend together like a slime shake from a Lucio Fulci movie.

Funebre’s lifespan was short but intense. Their 1990 Brainspoon 7” was originally released by Germany’s The Whisper In Darkness label, which released only three seven-inch records. This is the first-ever reissue of this sought-after two-track 7” presenting the classic Finnish death metal sound with a hint of old-school true metal madness. A 11-minute thrill ride through ever-changing dark sewers and necropolises.

Interment from Paimio only released one demo tape and one 7” through the legendary Comeback Records. Life Here After 7” (1991) sounds like an unholy bastard child of Xysma’s grind and Funebre’s catchy death metal riffing, injected with dark and almost psychedelic, spaced-out lead guitar solos. It was about time to dig this buried and moldy treasure out of the coffin for a wider audience.

Sons Of Apollo was an American progressive metal supergroup active from 2017 to 2023 and composed of drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), bassist Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big, Steve Vai, David Lee Roth), keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Alice Cooper, Billy Idol), vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen, Journey), and guitarist Ron ”Bumblefoot” Thal (Guns N’ Roses). The combination of the members proved to be irresistible on their 2017 debut album Psychotic Symphony. Now, this special live release from 2019 is finally available on vinyl for the first time via Svart Records.

Live With The Plovdiv Psychotic Symphony was recorded at the spectacular Roman Amphitheatre in Plovdiv, Bulgaria on September 22nd, 2018. The band’s performance was divided into two sets, the second of which saw them joined by a full orchestra and choir.

Twin Serpent's sophomore album out now via Svart Records

Facilitating country influences and the energy of punk, Twin Serpent is a noisy but cute outsider band that manages to blur genre boundaries. Inspired by the likes of The Taxpayers and 16 Horsepower, this crust-country band applies lo-fi black metal aesthetics without having to bathe in blood. Songs about love, betrayal and defiance are delivered with acoustic to amp-wall dynamics, duelling vocal harmonies, shrieking solos and distorted banjos.

The debut album Feels Like Heaven, North Of Hell (2022, Loyal Blood Records) was described by the press as genre-defying and compared to bands like GY!BE and Tom Waits. The sophomore TRUE NORWEGIAN BLACKGRASS turns the volume to twelve and the trainbeat races down the tracks at a derailing speed. Covering topics on windmill resistance, p**n industry and post-Trump America accompanied by playful country punk with a twinkle in the eye, laced with cosmic and occult undertones.

There’s even a song in Finnish on the album, which came out great! The artwork is amazing and everything is there for a reason. Legendaarinen hardcore-yhtye Ratface julkaisee kolmannen albumin syyskuussa

⚫️ Kotimainen hardcore-veteraani Ratface julkaisi uunituoreen sinkkulohkaisun tulevalta kokopitkältään Äitienpäivän viikonlopun kunniaksi perjantaina 8.5 ja samalla käynnistyi tulevan täyspitkän ennakkomyynti. Jo 20 vuotta täyttävä jyrsijäremmi on takonut nopean rautaista hardcore-metalliaan alkuperäisjäsenistöllä alusta asti. Eikä loppua näy. Pikemminkin päinvastoin.

Ratfacen omintakeinen hardcore on aitoa ja lähes mahdoton suoraan kopioida. Tuttuun tapaan levy on pullollaan vierailijoita, tiukkoja riffejä, ja vielä tiukempaa soittoa. Tulevalla kolmannella pitkäsoitollaan bändi on vaihtanut tulkintakielekseen täysin suomen kielen, ja sehän tuntuu luontevalta. Albumi kantaa nimeä S.N.L.M ja se julkaistaan syyskuun 25. päivä.

Maailman Äideille -single on kunnianosoitus mutseille, mummoille, äitipuolille ja äitihahmoille. Kaikille äidinmielisille. Tätä ei kannata missata. Kappaleella on nimittäin mukana elävä legenda Tomi Joutsen. Kuten jo aiemmin julkaistulla albumin nimikkokappaleella S.N.L.M huomattiin, on huutokieli vaihtunut kätevästi enkusta suomeen. Ja hyvä niin. Näin saadaan tarinoihin kaivattua syvyyttä ja runot soljuvat luontevammin MC Respektorin syljen mukana äänivastaanottimiin.

TEKSTI-TV 666 julkaisee neljännen minialbuminsa rajoitettuna vinyylipainoksena elokuussa

⚫️ Suomen kovin indierock-jyrä Teksti-TV 666 julkaisi kiirastorstaina 2. huhtikuuta uuden EP:n 4 digitaalisesti All That Plazzilla. Yhtyeen aiemmat albumit sekä EP:t vinyylinä julkaissut Svart Records jatkaa samalla linjalla myös tuoreen minialbumin kohdalla. 4 on pieni uuden alku kansainvälisesti kovassa kulttinosteessa olevalle omaleimaiselle rockbändille.

Teksti-TV 666 tunnetaan riehakkaasta krautrockista, joka on nostanut yhtyeen suomalaisen indierockin poikkeustapaukseksi myös kansainvälisesti. Varsinkin Ruotsissa ja Tanskassa bändillä on vahva ja kovassa nousussa oleva kulttimaine.

Uusi EP tarjoilee neljän biisin verran kansainvälisesti tämän hetken kiinnostavinta suomalaista indierockia. KÄTYRLAUMA julkaisi uuden singlen ja videon tänään, debyyttialbumi Hurme ulkona keväällä 2026

Kätyrlauma on turkulainen historiallis-mytologinen hardcore punk-yhtye, joka on aiemmin julkaissut kaksi EP:tä. Yhtyeen kesällä 2026 julkaistava debyyttialbumi Hurme keskittyy teemallisesti raakoihin historiallisiin tapahtumiin ja tarinoihin. Musiikillisesti yhtye on aiempaa astetta kokeilevampi, ja folk- sekä metallivaikutteet saavat levyllä entistä enemmän tilaa.

Tänään julkaistiin tulevan albumin toinen single Sika-Kyösti.

”190 vuotta sitten legendaarinen Turun seudulla vaikuttanut varas Kustaa Mikonpoika Nummelin ammuttiin Raision kirkon pihaan. Kätyrlauman uusi single on saanut nimensä ja inspiraationsa tuosta myyttisestä hahmosta, jollaisena Kustaa paremmin tunnettiin; Sika-Kyösti. Dutch black metal ritual Doodswens have released a drum/vocal playthrough video for 'Driven By Death' which is taken from the band's freshly released album, Doodswens. The new offering was released on 17th April, via Svart Records.

It’s not often you see a black metal band do a playthrough video, and especially not in this kind of setting. Drummer/vocalist I. takes you through an intense and authentic rendition of ‘Driven By Death'.
