No Nurse in Rural Village Leaves Residents Vulnerable

Inside the Valley Road Navosa, Wauosi Village in Sigatoka, a healthcare crisis is unfolding. With no nurse stationed in the village, residents are facing with challenges accessing essential medical services.

The absence of a healthcare professional has left the community vulnerable, particularly in emergencies and routine medical needs.
As the village is located several miles away from the nearest town, its important for the dedicated nurse to provide primary healthcare services to its residents. However, the end of recent nurse and staffing have led to the no nursing services in the village.

Resisdent Mere Tiboko says "It's incredibly worrying not having a nurse in our village anymore. We are always rely on them for everything from vaccinations to first aid. Now, we're left with no immediate access to medical assistance." “Without a nurse to administer medications or provide basic healthcare advice, many residents are left to fend for themselves or face lengthy journeys to seek medical assistance elsewhere.”

60 year Makelesi Sake says “I rely on regular check-ups and basic medical care, and without a nurse nearby, accessing these services has become difficult for me.” In emergencies, “I have to travel long distances to reach the nearest healthcare facility, which can be dangerous, especially with health conditions.”

The gravity of the situation, admitting that efforts to secure a replacement nurse have been met with numerous challenges. "We understand the importance of having a healthcare professional in our community, but unfortunately, recruitment efforts have been unsuccessful so far”

Farmer Pauliasi says “ It definitely adds an extra layer of stress”. Farming is a physically demanding job, and injuries or accidents can happen anytime. Without a nurse nearby, we have to rely on basic first aid at home using basic knowledge and hope for the best.

In the meantime, residents are urged to remain vigilant and seek alternative healthcare from other health station as a options when necessary. Community-led initiatives, such as first aid training and the establishment of volunteer healthcare networks, are being explored to mitigate the impact of the nurse shortage.

Advisory councillor, Ratu Boyala says, efforts are ongoing to address this issue. He is actively reaching out to healthcare organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions to explore potential solutions. “ As this not only affects individuals health but also places a strain on families and the community as a whole.

As the community of the village with the situation of not having a nurse in their village, there is a hope that swift action will be taken to restore essential healthcare services and posting of nurse to ensure well-being of all residents.

Ben Gollings takes legal action against FRU after termination.

Former Fiji Men’s 7s coach Ben Gollings is pursuing legal action against the Fiji Rugby Union, for what he claims to be an unlawful termination.
Fiji rugby union had earlier this month terminated the contract of the men’s 7s coach Ben Gollings as a result of his alleged failure to meet the expected performance standards.
Despite his dismissal, Gollings recently bade farewell to the Fiji 7s players, expressing his well-wishes for their future endeavors.
The FRU in place appointed Osea Kolinisau to guide Fiji’s campaign to the 2024 Paris Olympics in July.
FRU Board of Trustees chair Peter Mazey while making the announcement in a media conference in Suva revealed Gollings was given three verbal and a written warning before the decision to terminate his services was made.
He said Gollings’ dedication and efforts have been commendable, but they must prioritise the ultimate goal of securing medals for Fiji in sevens rugby at the summer Olympics.
Under Gollings’ leadership, the Fiji men’s 7s team struggled to secure victories in the HSBC 7s Series, enduring a winless streak spanning 19 tournaments.
This lack of success contributed to the FRU’s decision, to part ways with Gollings.

Working in one of the best forests in the world

Gisborne has long been known for growing the world's best radiata pine due to its unique climate and topography, making its forests some of the finest in the world.
Jekope Kaicawaro, a forestry worker in Impact Forestry Limited, talks about his job in the Gisborne forests.
Kaicawaro wakes up at 4 am every day to get ready for work before he drives his van to pick up his crew workers.
His line of work is pruning pine tree branches to remove unwanted branches and improve the tree’s structure for healthy growth.
“Our crew is known as the Ultra Crew, our work is very risky and not easy,” says Jekope.
Their job in the forestry industry is the riskiest of all, they a tasked to climb up to 6 meters to prune nearly 70 -100 trees a day.
Kaicawaro says other than the risk of falling 6 meters from the top, they get to travel and see the great scenery in the Gisborne Forest.

Heavy rain refrains bridge to be used after flash flood.

Waousi settlements have been advised to refrain from crossing bridge as they are closed due to flooding, rain has been falling nonstop since early in the morning, causing the bridge at Valley Road Navosa, Wauosi Village in Sigatoka to overflow.
Advisory councillor of the village Ratu Boyala says that due to heavy rain since yesterday night , the river was flooded by the morning, and this morning when he tried to go to Sigatoka Town, the bridges were flooded and a portion of the bridge has been washed away.

The bridge has always been a concern for many years as it always gets flooded during the rainy season and the issue has not been fixed to date. The bridge is between village and school where communities are dependent on these vital arteries of transportation and may find themselves hindering access to school.

“For safety reasons, we’ve advised our children against attending school until flooding subsides.”
He says that this is a serious issue as this type of weather always meant students missing school as they are no able to cross the bridge. However flooding is not new to them, emphasizing the villagers resilience in confronting such challengers.

“All students rely on that bridge to get to school, and with it closed, attendance has dropped. It's also been challenging for teachers who live on the other side of the bridge to commute to work.”

Moreover, the closure of the bridge has had a significant impact on our school community. Many of our students rely on that bridge to get to school, and with it closed, attendance has dropped. It's also been challenging for teachers who live on the other side of the bridge to commute to work.
During heavy rains in a village, the major concern is the bridge's suitability and not being flooded, ensuring school students can cross the road without missing school. The closet house member ensures the bridge is not flooded and updates the villagers on its condition.

A long- time residents Timoci Sete says it's been quite challenging, to be honest. With the bridge being closed, it takes much longer to get to town for work, groceries, and other necessities. We have to take a detour through rough time, which is not only inconvenient but also risky, especially during heavy rain.

“Sometimes We're frustrated, to say the least. This bridge is our lifeline, connecting us to essential services and opportunities. Its closure has disrupted our routines and made simple tasks much more difficult.”

The flow of flood water affects the road that does not allow transportation to cross of the teachers who resistant themselves at school cottage.
However villagers members always try and put a lot of efforts to make the road better after flooding subsides for road to be suitable and available immediately for villagers, students and teachers.

The government's welfare funds and donations provide essential support to the incapable.
Disabled and elderly individuals are not confined to their homes and are provided with opportunities to lead a normal life.

Digital Poverty Divides Online Education in rural schools

A lack of telephone and Internet connectivity in rural areas is having a negative effect on school children’s’ education in terms of using the latest technologies to improve studies.

Wauosi Village up the Sigatoka Valley hinders the efforts of children and young people in their studies. Early Childhood Education teacher Ashika Anjaline says, many students from distant villages like Wauosi up the Sigatoka Valley are deprived of access to high-speed Internet and technology.

“This creates a significant barrier for students to participate in online education, especially during the pandemic when remote learning became necessary,” said Anjaline.

“It goes further than education. The situation is serious because people depend so much on technology for communications.

“The lack of Internet connections means that a person can lose connection with friends since so much social activity is conducted nowadays online.

Facebook and Instagram are “places” where many young people meet, and if someone can’t meet there, they could lose contact with friends,” said Anjaline.

A resident Epeli Kolosoni says “we are unable to call for the assistance that would be beneficial to someone in the village in the event of an emergency, such as when someone becomes sick or is involved in an accident.

“Students are the ones who are most immediately affected by the lack of access.”

Kolosoni remarked that families without access to the Internet at home, maybe for financial reasons, find it challenging for their students to finish and turn in schoolwork on time.

This digital divide, increases disparity between the education and opportunities available in the village.
