I AM WOMAN MAGAZINE FIJI - 15th March 2023. Today is WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY. If you have ever purchased something and needed to return it, you have exercised your consumer’s rights. These rights have not always been something that was easily defined or enforced.

In Fiji we have Consumer Council of Fiji who is the main watch dog that protects the rights and interests of consumers in Fiji by promoting a fair and just delivery of goods and services in Fiji. Check out their social media pages where they provide useful hints to consumers on what to look out for when purchasing goods and services.

World Consumer Rights Day originated in 1983 to mobilize citizen action. Citizen action groups have been a large part of bringing change into the marketplace. They have lobbied for safer products and protections from harmful practices and products. Over time, the consumer movement has worked to write what is now regarded as the 8 basic consumer rights. These rights include ideas such as the right to safety, the right to satisfaction of basic needs, the right to redress and the right to be informed.

I AM WOMAN MAGAZINE Fiji - 3rd February 2023. Today is NATIONAL WOMEN PHYSICIANS DAY. Opportunities for women in the medical field have continued to increase and reports show that the number of female doctors continue to grow in most westernized countries throughout the globe.

As of 2019, the number of female medical students in the United States were higher than their male medical student counterparts.

This shift in gender empowerment has been a long time coming, and the way has been paved by women physicians who worked hard, faced discouragement and fought to tear down walls that kept them from doing their best work in the medical field.

Today, National Women Physicians Day honors and respect the the past, present and future of women in the medical field.

Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman in the United States to graduate from medical school in 1849, and graduated first in her class and became a well-respected physician.

Blackwell was critical in initiating the movement that helped women to gain entry, and eventually equality, in the field of medicine.

Her work in setting the pace for and promoting women in the medical world is celebrated on her birthday, February 3, in the form of National Women Physicians Day.

I AM WOMAN MAGAZINE Fiji - 1st February 2023. Today is NATIONAL GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY. Sports teaches commitment, teamwork, leadership, cooperation, strength, endurance and many other important qualities, girls and women will attest to. It also has many benefits like health, meeting new friends, travel and promotes gender equality in every way

The first National Women in Sports Day was established in 1987 when United States President Ronald Reagan declared the day to be set aside to acknowledge the important part that women play in sports. The original day was set aside particularly to honor the participation of Flo Hyman, a volleyball player who worked hard to advocate for the equality of women in sports. Hyman died suddenly of a genetic disorder while participating in a volleyball tournament in Japan.

In Fiji and globally, there is still sexism in certain sports where the "boys" get the better accommodation/transport, more publicity (TV view time), sponsorships etc. There is evidence of sexual harassment in countries and gender discrimination amongst players, fans and women in sports careers.

We encourage all of you to support girls and women in sports by being a player or a fan. We insist all sporting bodies develop gender equity policies within their organization and hire more women sports executives.

I AM WOMAN MAGAZINE Fiji - 222nd January 2023. Today is CHINESSE NEW YEAR. Happy Chinese New Year to all of you.

This is China’s most important festival and can be traced back about 3,500 years ago.

Legend of the Origin of Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is steeped with stories and myths. The story goes that a race was organised by the Jade Emperor - one of the most important gods in traditional Chinese religion - who invited all the animals in the world to take part.

Twelve species turned up at the start line: a pig, dog, rooster, monkey, sheep, horse, snake, dragon, rabbit, tiger, ox and rat.
As a reward for turning up, the Emperor named a year in the zodiac after each one, while the race would determine the order each animal would be placed.

Years of the Rabbit include 2023, 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951, 1939, 1927...

2023 is a year of the Water Rabbit, starting from January 22nd, 2023 (Chinese New Year), and ending on February 9th, 2024 (Chinese New Year's Eve).

The sign of Rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity in Chinese culture.

2023 is predicted to be a year of hope.

I AM WOMAN MAGAZINE Fiji - 17th January 2023. Today is NATIONAL KID INVENTOR'S DAY. Just because children possess less knowledge of how the world works, that doesn’t mean they can’t have ideas for practical and useful inventions.

In fact, many people believe that children are capable of being particularly creative for the simple reason that they don’t yet know how difficult many things are, and are therefore able to imagine much more than adults.

In fact, there are plenty of things we enjoy on an everyday basis that were invented by children or teenagers. And if their creativity doesn’t deserve recognition, what does? National Kid Inventors’ Day is the day we celebrate all the kids who dared to defy the world and come up with better solutions than all of the adults before them. (daysoftheyear.com)

I AM WOMAN MAGAZINE FIJI - 10th January 2023.

As 2023 welcomes in a new Government for Fiji, we encourage the Government to ensure that women are fairly represented in leadership and decision making roles within their Governmental areas. We also encourage all companies and groups to have fair representation of women at all levels.

As the global world begins to recognise the massive leadership roles women are positively contributing to - Papua New Guinea for the first time, has an empowered woman running for Governor-General.

Former High Commissioner to the UK and prominent women's leader, Winnie Kiap, has become the first female candidate nominated to the post, along with two men.

Although the post is not political, commentators say it could mean a lot for gender equality if she became governor-general.

I AM WOMAN MAGAZINE FIJI - 4th January 2023. Today is WORLD BRAILLE DAY where we celebrate the birth of Louis Braille, inventor of the reading and writing system used by millions of blind and partially sighted people all over the globe.

Today raises an awareness about issues facing the blind and the importance of continuing to produce works in Braille, providing the blind with access to the same reading and learning opportunities as the sighted.

Louis Braille, the inventor of braille, was born in France on January 4th, 1809. Blinded in both eyes in an accident as a child, Braille nevertheless managed to master his disability while still a child. Despite not being able to see at all, he excelled in his education and received scholarship to France’s Royal Institute for Blind Youth.

The braille system works by representing the alphabet letters (and numbers) in a series of 6 dots paired up in 3 rows. The simplicity of Louis's idea allowed books to start being produced on a large scale in a format that thousands of blind people can read by running their fingertips over the dots.

Now blind students have the opportunity to be educated alongside their peers as well as read for pleasure just as easily as any seeing person can. THANK YOU LOUIS BRAILLE.(www.daysoftheyear)

I AM WOMAN MAGAZINE Fiji - 2nd January 2023. Happy New Year to one and all. Today is WORLD INTROVERT DAY and for those of us who are inward-focused, it is okay. Many studies have shown that introverts, despite their deep need for alone-time are quite interesting people.

2022 was an odd year for us Fijians - knowing that an ageing Fijian woman living abroad in New Zealand died happy because Fiji had a change of Government is one of the few "joys" some of us experienced.

2022 wasn't an easy year globally for most of us but here we are at the beginning of the new year and today I want to be an INTROVERT where I need to spend some "alone time". As I reflect on the challenges in 2022, I will move forward into 2023 with HOPE.

A new Government indicates better living but it will not happen instantly - let us stand by our new Government and contribute TOGETHER to push Fiji forward. Remember this Government is the peoples government. GOD BLESS FIJI.
