In Australia, many more Protection visa (subclass 866) applications are refused than granted.

More than 85% of applications are refused, as they don’t meet the visa requirements. Applications from some nationalities have refusal rates close to 100%.

Protection visas are for asylum seekers – people who face a real risk of significant harm or persecution if they return home.

They are not for people who just want to stay longer in Australia to work.

There may be other visas more suited to your circumstances. For more information visit homeaffairs.gov.au/protection

Dear Fiji Government and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka

We urgently call for the immediate relocation and provision of a safe temporary shelter for the resilient people of Nadaro Village in Tailevu. They deserve better.

Over 50 homes are now submerged following overnight flooding, putting children, pregnant mothers, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and entire livelihoods at risk. Livestock and food sources have been lost.

Beyond the physical destruction, there is now an alarming public health risk. Standing floodwaters and poor sanitation conditions drastically increase the chances of waterborne and vector-borne diseases such as leptospirosis, dengue fever, typhoid, tuberculosis, and diarrhea.

We urge the Ministry of Health, Fiji to immediately assess and monitor the area and provide the necessary medical support and preventative care.

Until long-term solutions are implemented to address the village’s vulnerable waterways and deteriorating road access, temporary relocation is not just necessary, it is critical.

This is only the beginning. Without swift action, the next natural disaster could completely wipe out the village.

Hon Alitia Bainivalu MP is clearly the ONLY cabinet Minister that’s actually reliable and forthcoming when it comes to helping serve the people of Fiji. This is what a true servant of Fiji looks like. Not just nice designed dresses and expensive accessories, its about humbling yourself and meeting the needs of the people of Fiji.
