PACIFIC fisheries officials are moving to shore up compliance with new European Union food-safety rules that could affect 97 per cent of EU-listed Pacific Island-flagged freezer vessels authorised to export to the bloc.

National Competent Authority officials from Fiji, Kiribati, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu gathered in Suva this week for a two-week technical training on Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/1449, which entered into force on January 27 and introduce tighter requirements for freezer vessels supplying the EU seafood market.

FIJI has called for faster, simpler and more flexible climate finance for small island states, warning at the Global Environment Facility Assembly that the world is moving too slowly as climate risks intensify.

In her address in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Fiji’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Lynda Tabuya, said the world is in a “last sprint toward 2030”, and that small island developing states are trying to do the work of a marathon “we are far from completing.”

KIRIBATI has secured a seat on the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for the 2026–2030 term, marking a first for the atoll nation and a significant diplomatic moment for the wider Pacific.

The election gives Kiribati a place on the UN’s principal intergovernmental body dedicated to gender equality and women’s empowerment, at a time when Pacific leaders are pushing for stronger recognition of climate-linked social pressures on women and girls.

FIJI Airways has announced the resumption of direct flights between Nadi and Nadi Nouméa Back Online: Fiji Airways bringing back online a key regional link starting September 22.

The twice-weekly service will operate every Tuesday and Friday using Fiji Link’s ATR 72-600 aircraft, adding more than 10,000 seats annually between Fiji and New Caledonia.
