The 2025 China–Fiji Short Film Festival successfully concluded its two-day program, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the China Cultural Centre in Fiji.
Featuring a curated lineup of 52 incredible films.Highlights included the Opening Ceremony, China - Fiji Film Exchange panel discussions, and invaluable exchanges between renowned Chinese animation film professors (Ye Youtian & Zhong Yuanbo) and Fiji’s local film and arts community. The first selection of short films were successfully screened,highlighting the incredible talent and cultural connections between China and Fiji.

Producer Spotlight: Fenton Lutunatabua

Fijian filmmaker and climate activist Fenton Lutunatabua participated in Film Fiji’s Fiji Producers Accelerator Program (FPAP) funded by the ACP-EU Culture Grant facilitated through SPC, where he gained valuable insights that greatly benefited the development of his short film, Vakaraitaka. Premiering at the Maoriland Film Festival, the world’s largest indigenous film festival, the film is a cinematic poem that explores themes of climate justice, activism, and Pacific identity.

Vakaraitaka weaves together four of Lutunatabua’s original poems -Tinaqu (Mother), Matagi Mālohi (Strong Winds), Kawa (Descendants), and Luvequ (Child) each reflecting on heritage, place, and the impact of climate change. The project, developed over three years during the COVID-19 pandemic, involved collaborations with local Fijian dance group Wehi, fashion designer KuiViti, and a musician from Guam to ensure authentic Pacific representation.

Filmed in locations of deep personal significance, including the mountains where Lutunatabua and his wife were married, Vakaraitaka is more than just a film it is a call to action. By bringing indigenous storytelling to the forefront, Lutunatabua hopes to inspire a new generation of Pacific climate activists to use their voices and art to address the urgent challenges of climate change.

The German Embassy in Fiji recently hosted a concert featuring the world-renowned German-Korean pianist Caroline Fischer. Known for her exceptional virtuosity and deep musical insight, Fischer delighted concert-goers with a two-hour program of classical piano music. Her performance included works by masters like Chopin, Mozart, and Liszt, often featuring pieces that skillfully blend Chinese and Western cultural influences.

In 1995, Director Vijay Rattan brought us Angrakshak, a film that achieved "firsts" for local Fijian moviemaking:

First Double Role Hindi Film: The first time a local production featured an actor in a double role!

Community-Funded: The film was a true grassroots effort, supported by the community.

First-Time Cast: The entire cast was stepping in front of the camera for the very first time, making this a first for local talent!

Angrakshak is more than a movie; it's a testament to the passion and dedication of Fiji's local creative community!
