Bowls and table tennis players who competed at the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Championships respectively in recent months were honoured with a special reception this week, held at Government House, Falkland Islands.

During the reception, the Governor, Colin Martin-Reynolds, and the Chair of the Falkland Islands National Sports Council, Mike Summers, spoke about the role sport plays in putting the Falklands on the map.

A new indoor sports facility was officially opened on Friday night, providing space for the Falkland Islands Cricket Club, Falklands Archery Association and Falkland Islands Bowls Association to train inside and at all times of the year.

On opening night, there was an opportunity for people to have a look at some of the equipment and try their hand at bowls and cricket.

Bill Chater, Chair of the Archery Association, told FITV how this new facility could impact the sport in the Falklands.

In the UK, Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories, the 3rd of September marks Merchant Navy Day. It is a day used to remember and thank those past and present who work in the global sea trade industry.

Here in the Falklands, the Red Ensign was raised on Victory Green and the Lighthouse Seafarers Mission, next to the port.

Mally Port, Deputy Harbour Master at the Falkland Islands Maritime Authority, told FITV earlier this week why the Merchant Navy is so important for the Falklands.

Executive Council last week approved work on creating 10 new national nature reserves and expanding five others, following a proposal put forward by the Environment Department and a period of public consultation.

The proposed areas are a range of inland and marine locations, and are both Government and privately-owned.

Erica Berntsen, Biodiversity Protection Advisor for Falkland Islands Government, outlined to FITV how each of the sites was selected to become a Reserve.

Following the closure of the second loligo season, FITV approached the Fisheries Department earlier this week to provide more information on the data behind the decision to bring fishing of the squid species to an end for this year.

James Wilson, Director of the Natural Resources Department, explained why a complete cancellation and not another pause was necessary.

Representatives from the Falklands' public and private sectors will travel to Punta Arenas at the end of September.

The business showroom trip has been organised by the Municipality of Punta Arenas, and will see those travelling meet with different sectors who could play a part in shipping to the Falklands when the Chilean cargo link is re-established.

Last week, Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce Board Member Mike Summers and Falkland Islands Development Corporation Deputy Managing Director Louise Ellis sat down with FITV and explained the interest from Chile and what they were hoping to get out of the trip.

Wool producers experienced a welcome boost in the latest season, with prices increasing by 70%.

This follows a number of years when prices had been significantly lower, leading to hardship among those in the industry.

Tanya Clarke, Manager of the Falkland Islands Wool Company, told FITV this week why this upturn has come about.

Falkland Islands Government has closed the second loligo season, following concerns over low squid biomass.

This follows a previous two-week suspension and subsequent data analysis by the Natural Resources Department.

John Barton, Chair of Falkland Islands Fishing Companies Association. told FITV the day after the closure was announced that the industry had been warning FIG of potential problems for some time.
