The New Pound… More Than a Banknote
The pound is not just numbers we use in transactions.
It is people’s labor, the memory of homes, the stories of markets, and the security of tomorrow.
Today, in my capacity as First Deputy Governor of the Central of and a member of the team working on the project to launch the new pound, I fully understand that this decision cannot be measured by calculations alone, but by what it means to every citizen who holds the pound in their hand and places their hopes in it.
Removing zeros does not change the purchasing power of the pound.
Rather, it is an attempt to restore it to its natural place in people’s daily lives.
It is a step to organize everyday transactions, making prices clearer, calculations easier, and trust closer.
We know that a currency does not gain strength through design alone,
nor through administrative decisions only,
but through stability, discipline, and honesty with the people.
That is why we are working on this project calmly, responsibly, and in phases,
to ensure a smooth transition period
and to safeguard citizens’ rights, wages, savings, and obligations without any harm.
The new pound is not a quick promise,
nor a magic solution,
but a step on a long road toward rebuilding trust
And trust is the foundation of any economy and any future.
We are aware of the scale of the challenges,
and we also know that deserve a currency that respects their labor, patience, and sacrifices.
This is our responsibility at the Central of 🇸🇾
And we will live up to it.
