Our Journey...Your Journey Soapbox Republic is an interactive community aiming to explore the solutions to the globes environmental problems.

These problems have a number of different themes; Habitat loss, Biodiversity Loss, Ecosystem degradation and Human-Wildlife Conflict. You are unlikely to see a more eloquent expression of how corporate greed is undermining the foundations of life than witnessing the 40 odd trawlers fishing off our starboard beam this Saturday morning. Clustered in an area 15NM by 15NM, they are dominated by controversial behemoths like the Afrika and Frank Bonitace. Trawlers with a length of over 100m, they catch fish with such efficiency that competing owner operators, running 30m vessels, have no means to compete. Aside from the removal of fish stock the habitat destruction caused by these oversized nets prevents recovery of stocks, leading to a year on year depletion of biomass.

Then you can grapple with the skewed practices that allows corporate controlled vessels like the Boniface dominate quota allocations. She currently controls 23% of UK fishing quotas, which still doesn’t prevent her skipper from pursuing and being fined for illegal fishing practices.

Sun rise in the Finnish taiga. These last stand of forest are protected only at they sit in a restricted access area less then 5k a from the Russian border. Lack of hunting means protection for wolves and bears which flourish in this area.

I was proud to call Lolie a friend. He was a fisherman, though many denigrated him as a poacher.

The truth is always more complex. Lolie just did what he d always done. Fishing to feed his family. In 1998 when the laws changed to favour commercial fishing operations, he and many like him, found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

He was a raconteur with a rapier sharp wit and community activist. Whenever you hung out with him he always held a crowd.

This image was made during a shoot for a short film I made some years ago looking at the small scale fisheries in post 1995 South Africa.
