Career-Best Fifth Overall for Craig at Atlanta Triple Crown Supercross

With injuries having put Team Honda HRC riders Cole Seely and Ken Roczen out for the remainder of the AMA Supercross series, GEICO Honda racer Christian Craig filled in aboard a factory CRF450R as the squad’s sole rider for round nine in Atlanta. It was an outstanding night for Craig, as he notched his career-best 450SX result with a fifth-overall score via an impressive 6-7-5 race tally. When the gate dropped for the first of three 450SX main events, Craig grabbed the holeshot and early lead. With four minutes remaining, Craig came under heavy pressure and had to give up multiple spots, and he ultimately took the checkered flag in sixth. In the second race, Craig managed a sixth-place start, then slipped to seventh at the halfway mark and stayed there to the finish. The evening’s final race proved to be another exciting one, as Craig launched to his second holeshot of the night and rode up front like a class veteran until lap four, when he was overtaken. He relinquished three more positions by the end, crossing the finish line in fifth.

NOTES

During the daytime qualifying practice period, Christian Craig struggled to get comfortable with the Georgia clay, posting the ninth-fastest time of 53.238”, in the second session. Smartop MotoConcept’s Justin Brayton was the top Red Rider, turning in the fifth-quickest time of 52.625”.

The Atlanta round marked the second event of the season to utilize the new Triple Crown format. The event included three 450SX races, all of different durations, and the format seemed to suit Craig’s style. “I enjoy the Triple Crown format,” he confirmed. “I did pretty good with it at Anaheim 2 on the 250, getting a podium, so I like it. I think the three-moto format makes for some good racing and you have to be consistent all night.”

The top-finishing Red Rider in Atlanta was Brayton, who scored an impressive win in race one and then followed that with sixth-place results in the second and third races for fourth overall. “I had my wife and two kids here, and this is the only race they’re coming to all year, so that was extra-special,” Brayton said. “I know it’s not an overall win, but I’ll take it.” Brayton has been riding well all year and is currently fourth in points.

For the evening program, Craig requested that gear-sponsor Alias make him a special butt patch reading “ #14” to show his support for the injured Cole Seely, who is a close friend and training partner. “Cole and I have been really good friends since we were both at TLD,” Craig said. “We spend a lot of time together during the week, between riding, training in the gym, and just hanging out, so I thought this was a cool way to show my support. We’ll be staying with him in Florida after this weekend so we can keep him company and help out if needed.”

On Saturday morning, Team Honda HRC got together for a group photo in front of Seely’s bike in order to send him a message of support. Later that evening, the squad received positive news that Seely had been released from the hospital and was being transported to his temporary home in Claremont, Florida. “It’s really great to know that Cole is out of the hospital,” said his mechanic Rich Simmons. “He still has a long road ahead of him, but we’re all behind him. He was obviously really sad he couldn’t be at the race, but it made him feel better knowing we were thinking about him and supporting him no matter what.”

For the second consecutive week, Ken Roczen was in attendance at the race, hanging out with his team and fans. Roczen attended Friday’s dealer appearance at Mountain Motorsports, joining Craig and the GEICO Honda 250 team. Between the second and third main events, Roczen was interviewed on the podium for the crowd of over 60,000 spectators. “It’s great coming to the races to hang out with my fans and sign autographs, but it’s really rough not being out there,” Roczen said. “I really dislike being at the races and not racing; it’s just hard. I can’t wait to get back on the bike and be with my team each weekend.”

This coming weekend, Team Honda HRC will be back in Florida for the 45th annual Daytona Supercross. On Friday, Roczen, fill-in Christian Craig, and the GEICO Honda 250 effort will take part in press day before heading to RC Hill Honda Powersports in DeLand for a pre-race party and autograph session.

THOMAS KJER-OLSEN SECURES RUNNER-UP RESULT IN ARGENTINA

ROCKSTAR ENERGY HUSQVARNA FACTORY RACING STAR KICKS OFF 2018 MX2 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CAMPAIGN WITH SECOND OVERALL AT GP OF PATAGONIA

Putting in two committed performances at the Neuquén track in Argentina, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer-Olsen has started the 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship with a solid runner-up overall result in the highly-competitive MX2 class.

Combining speed with impressive consistency, Kjer-Olsen wrapped up his weekend in Argentina with third in moto one and second in moto two. Enjoying great starts in what was a solid overall performance, the FC 250 powered rider heads back to Europe as runner-up in the MX2 World Championship’s provisional standings.

For Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington, the season opening GP of Patagonia brought some mixed fortunes. Battling from a poor start in the opening moto, the young American managed to finish in 10th place. Finding himself racing in the runner-up spot before the end of the second moto’s opening lap, Thomas eventually placed 18th at the chequered flag.

In the MXGP category, Gautier Paulin kicked off the 2018 season with a strong sixth overall in Argentina. Showing consistency in both motos, the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider enjoyed good starts and went on to cross the line in sixth position in each race. Knowing he has the speed to finish even higher, the Frenchman is looking forward to the coming GP on European soil in two weeks’ time.

For Paulin’s Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing MXGP team partner Max Anstie, the Brit arrived in Argentina looking to capitalise on his positive results from pre-season international races. Suffering crashes in both motos, Anstie wrapped up the season opening GP with 12/15 results for 13th overall in Argentina.

The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team will return to action at the second round of the 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship in Valkenswaard, The Netherlands on March 17/18.

Thomas Kjer-Olsen: “It’s always great to start a new season with a podium result. I’ve done a good job with the team and myself this winter so I am feeling good at the moment. Things worked out quite well here in Argentina and I’m happy with my speed. My goal was to remain consistent throughout the day and I’m happy I made it happen. My starts were also good and this shows we’re in a good spot for the rest of the championship. I am really looking forward to the next GP in The Netherlands.”

Thomas Covington: “Things did not go our way this weekend but I will do my best to come back stronger as we return to Europe. I struggled to get a good feeling throughout the weekend and I felt tired quite soon in the races. In the opening moto I battled from a not so good start to finish inside the top 10. Then in moto two my start was a lot better and I could battle with the leading group of riders for a few laps. Unfortunately, I felt tired quite fast so could not hold on to a good pace. I now have a week to recover so I’m hoping I can be back fighting for the top spots at the next GP.”

Gautier Paulin: “We made some progress during this weekend and I’m happy for that. On Saturday during qualifying I struggled with arm pump and wasn’t feeling really comfortable. But we made some good improvements with my bike setup so on Sunday things were a lot better. My starts were good in both motos and I rode consistently to two sixth place results. It is a little bit frustrating that I could not push for an even better result, but the truth is I did not feel 100% during this weekend. Last week I was sick so I guess my body has not fully recovered yet. There are no excuses and I am already looking forward to the next GP. My bike is awesome and the team do their best for us. We got some good points here in Argentina so now it’s over to the next one in Europe.”

Max Anstie: “We got the first GP of this long season out of the way and now we can focus on the ones to come. In the opening moto I didn’t manage to get a good start but I came through and was racing inside the top 10. Unfortunately, with two laps to go I had a crash and that dropped me back to 12th at the line. Then in the second moto I was in a great position after the gate drop, but I got tangled with another rider and crashed in the first corner. Hitting the ground, I got covered in sand and this made everything harder afterwards. It’s a shame I couldn’t show my potential here in Argentina, but I did salvage a few points eventually. It’s onwards and upwards now and I’m looking forward to the next GP now.”

ATLANTA SX RECAP: MUSQUIN AND SMITH CLAIM PODIUM FINISHES IN TRIPLE CROWN FORMAT

Round 9 - AMA Supercross Championship - March 3, 2018

ATLANTA – The AMA Supercross Championship entered the second half of its 17-round series on Saturday with an eventful Triple Crown format for Round 9. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team’s Marvin Musquin ended the night on a positive note by claiming victory in the third and final 450SX Main Event to secure 2nd overall in Atlanta. Additionally, Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jordon Smith earned his best finish of the season with 3rd overall in the highly competitive 250SX East division.

Showcasing three Main Events in lieu of the normal heat race to Main Event format, Round 9 mixed things up in both classes. In the 450SX class, Musquin had a strong start to the day as he claimed the fastest qualifying time of the afternoon to give him a boost of confidence heading into the three-race Main Event format. In Main Event #1, Musquin didn’t get off to the best start but he worked his way through the pack to put himself inside the top five just after the halfway point. With two laps to go, Musquin grabbed one more position to ultimately finish 4th in the first race.

In Main Event #2, Musquin began around the top-ten as he was forced to come through the pack once again. Musquin wasn’t able to make it up to the top-five until late in the race where he ran out of time, finishing a hard-fought 5th place.

Musquin was able to finish strong in the third and final Main Event of the night, this time putting his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION into the 3rd place position off the start. Musquin took advantage of his good start position and continued to move forward until he overtook the lead on lap five. From there, Musquin maintained a solid position to take his first Main Event win since the opening round. With combined scores of (4-5-1), Musquin earned 2nd overall in Atlanta.

Musquin: “It was a great track; the dirt was amazing and they made it super technical. I had the fastest qualifying time in the afternoon, which is awesome but my starts were not so good tonight. It’s really frustrating when you know you have the speed and you’re behind those guys. Luckily, I was able to regroup for the last moto and we put ourselves in a better position off the start, I was more outside and I was top three right away. I was really happy about my riding tonight except for the starts in the first two motos. It was great to put myself on the 2nd overall, which is good considering my first two results of the night. I’m losing points on the championship [to Jason Anderson] – that is the bad point of today – but the riding is good.”

Rocky Mountain ATV*MC – WPS – KTM’s Blake Baggett had a strong start to the day as well, earning a 3rd place finish in the first Main Event of the night, followed by a 4th place finish in the second race. However, Baggett went down in the third Main Event and wasn’t able to finish the race due to a wrist injury.

It was a tough day for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Broc Tickle, who experienced bad luck in all three races of the night, resulting in 19th place overall.

Tickle: “All around it was a tough night once racing started. Basically, out of three starts I had three crashes, so not a good night. Not sure what ladder I walked under this week as I feel like I just kept having bad luck with every race. It’s definitely not how I wanted my Atlanta Supercross to go. It's such a shame because I had a good week training and made some positive bike set-up changes. I was really happy with how it all went this week so definitely not the results I was expecting tonight."

TADDY BLAZUSIAK ON WINNING FORM AT BILBAO SUPERENDURO
Rnd 4, SuperEnduro 2018 - Bilbao, Spain

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Taddy Blazusiak claimed his second overall victory of the 2018 SuperEnduro World Championship by winning the penultimate round of the series in Bilbao, Spain. Team-mate Jonny Walker carded his second consecutive runner-up result with FMF KTM Factory Racing's Cody Webb completing the all-KTM podium in third.

With the battle for title honours heating up, the penultimate round of the series in Bilbao delivered another night of action-packed superenduro racing. KTM’s Webb and Blazusiak won all three finals between them, while Walker topped the Akrapovic SuperPole hot lap.

Following on from his heavy crash last time out in Malaga, Blazusiak knew he needed to fight back in order to keep his chances of winning a record-breaking seventh world crown alive. Staying out of trouble during the opening two finals, Blazusiak pushed Webb hard only to finish second each time out.

Saving his best for last, Taddy was hot out of the starting gate in final three. Quickly opening up a sizeable advantage, he controlled the race from the front and rode home for a convincing win. With it he secured the top step of the podium. His victory reduces his deficit in the championship standings to just 17 points ahead of the final round in Sweden remaining.

Taddy Blazusiak: “Things went well and I’m super happy with the overall outcome tonight. It feels great to get another overall victory on the board. To be honest coming into Bilbao I wasn’t feeling too great because I’m still carrying some niggling injuries from my crash last time out in Malaga. I wasn’t able to ride and train as much as I would have normally done. I rode steady in the first two races trying to find my rhythm and confidence again. I got a great start in the final race and knew it was my chance to strike. I gave it everything I had and came away with the victory. Overall, it’s been a good night and I’ve closed the gap to Cody to 17 points. I’ve got three races left to make it happen so I’m just going to make the best of what I can.”

For Jonny Walker, Bilbao marked yet another strong showing in his superenduro campaign. Firmly putting to bed his disappointing performances in rounds one and two, Jonny ended his night as runner-up for the second round in a row. Kicking things off with the fastest lap in the Akrapovic SuperPole, the KTM rider then placed a solid third in each of the three finals to secure the overall runner-up result.

Jonny Walker: “Winning the Akrapovic SuperPole was a great start to the night and ultimately helped me to finish in the runner-up spot. In the three races I think I rode too tense. I’m not sure why but I found it hard to get a decent flow on the track. I seemed to hit a wall after the third lap and wasn’t able to keep charging. Race three was my best of the night. I didn’t get the best of starts but was consistent the whole way and put in a good ride. Overall, I’m really happy to come away with the runner-up result to match the one I got last time out in Malaga. After a disappointing start to the series, to now have two podium results in a row shows that things have definitely moved in the right direction. I think finishing third overall in the final standings is now within my reach so that’s the target in Sweden.”

As championship leader, Cody Webb looked set to extend his advantage in the series with an impressive showing during the first two finals. Racing hard with close rival Blazusiak, the American secured two wins from two starts. But a succession of crashes in the third final saw his chances of a third overall victory unravel. Crashing twice within the space of a lap, Cody lost ground on the leaders and eventually finished eighth. Ending his night on the third step of the podium behind Blazusiak and Walker, he nevertheless holds a 17-point lead in the championship with just the final round in Sweden remaining.

Cody Webb: “The first two races went very well. I felt like I was riding smooth and consistent and came away with the win in each race. Unfortunately, my opportunity to take my third overall victory came undone in the third and final race. I was running second but when I came around to the matrix section I made a big mistake. I just didn’t get the angle right when I lifted the front wheel and ended up falling off the side of the track. I panicked a little and then pushed too hard to regroup and ended up having a huge crash shortly afterwards. It messed my bike up a bit and I couldn’t ride properly. After winning the first two races I was disappointed to let the overall win slip away like that.”

The FIM SuperEnduro World Championship concludes with the fifth and final round in Lidköping, Sweden on March 31st.

ROCKSTAR ENERGY HUSQVARNA FACTORY RACING’S JASON ANDERSON TAKES THE TRIPLE CROWN VICTORY IN ATLANTA

OSBORNE MAINTAINS 250SX EAST POINTS LEAD

The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Team faced the elusive Triple Crown format at the Atlanta Supercross, the ninth round of the series, held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday. Three 250SX East Main Events and three 450 Main Events proved to be a grueling task for riders, but the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Team was up for the task. Jason Anderson walked away with his first Triple Crown victory, while teammate Zach Osborne overcame adversity to put in a heroic ride and maintain his lead in the 250SX East championship. Dean Wilson had a steady night in the 450 class to finish eighth.

Jason Anderson pulled a fourth at the start of the first 450 Main Event and was on the tail of Baggett in third. He made a quick inside pass in the third lap to overtake the third-place spot then started battling.. He made the pass stick the following lap and sat solidly in third. He inched closer to the top-two with three and a half minutes to go and got aggressive as he made the pass for second. He swapped positions with the leader in a spectacular battle amongst the top-six riders, then held his ground to finish second. He pulled his first holeshot of 2018 in the second 450 Main Event, rode his own race out front, and held his ground to the very end to take the win. He was fourth at the start of the third and final 450 Main Event and inherited third after Blake Baggett went down in the rhythm section in the second lap. He stayed focused and made the pass for second a few laps later, then went back to third after battling with Eli Tomac with just over seven minutes remaining in the race. Still holding the points lead on the night, he rode a smart race to finish fourth. The 2-1-4 finish gave him his first Triple Crown victory of the season and maintains his lead in the 450 championship.

“I was really able to pull through for the races,” said Anderson. “Practice didn’t go as well as I had hoped, but I pulled through. I was consistent during the races—that’s what helped the most. The whoops were sketchy, but I had enough of a cushion in the last main to not have to push it so hard and still come out with the overall."

Zach Osborne was second at the start of the first 250 Main Event and waited for his opportunity to strike. His chance came with just over four minutes remaining as he took the lead after the leader went off the track. He stayed strong to take the first victory of the night. He was second at the start of the second 250 Main Event and quickly regained the position after falling back to third. He turned up the intensity and put on a charge before coming together with Austin Forkner and going down. He quickly remounted and rode smart to finish third. He was top-10 at the start of the final 250 Main Event but went down after getting caught up in a group of downed riders in the beginning of the race. The incident put him farther back in the pack with nine and half minutes to go. He had his work cut out for him, but knew what he was capable of. Filled with determination, he charged through the pack and put on a heroic ride to finish fifth. The 1-3-5 gave him second overall on the night and maintains his lead in 250SX East rider point standings.

“It was a decent night,” said Osborne. “I missed out on the overall in the last main - it is what it is - but I’m still happy with the night. I had a great ride in the first main, and two strong rides after that. I hit my nose and my face pretty hard in the second main when I crashed, but I’m going to keep fighting."

Dean Wilson was mid-pack at the start of the first 450 Main Event and made his way up to 11th with just over five minutes remaining in the race. He put in a charge and made two more passes to finish ninth. He was top-10 at the start of the second Main Event and rode a consistent race to finish 10th. He was mid-pack at the start of the final 450 Main Event and focused on moving through the pack. He charged up to 11th with a little over seven minutes remaining and continued to put in work. He made one more pass to finish 10th. The 9-10-10 finish gave him eighth overall on the night. He is currently 12th in 450 rider point standings.

“The three race format was definitely a bit hectic,” said Wilson. “I kept getting in little pileups the first few laps, which set me back a bit. I’m going to focus on getting my starts dialed so I can run up front in the coming weeks. I’m excited for Daytona, and I hope to be in the top-five."

Teammate Michael Mosiman lined up for the first time this season in the 250SX East class. He rode hard and went 18-12-12 for 13th overall on the night.

MXGP of Patagonia Argentina

MX2 2018 Round 1
Impressive comeback to fifth for Vlaanderen in qualifying race
Calvin Vlaanderen scored a fifth-place finish in today’s qualifying race of the opening round of the 2018 MX2 season, which is currently underway at Villa La Angostura in Argentina.

Today’s result came at the end of a very encouraging day for the 21-year-old South African rider, who was previously third and fifth, respectively, in the free and timed practice sessions aboard the all-new Honda CRF250RW machine #10.

Vlaanderen had a satisfactory start to the race but found himself stuck on the inside line at the first corner and was forced to give up a good number of positions. After crossing the line in 15th place at the end of lap one, he started an impressive charge to the front which culminated in a successful overtaking manoeuvre for fifth on Darian Sanayei during the penultimate lap.

MX2 action will resume tomorrow morning at 10:25 local time (GMT -3) with the 15 minute warm up session, which will be followed by the two opening races of the season at 12:15 and 15:10.
