🚪 New doors installed… and now we’re stuck! 😳

The house finally looks neater with our new front & back doors, but now it’s time for a BIG decision — our kitchen layout.

Island?
Peninsula?
Or… both? 😅

We’ve mocked up three different kitchen layouts (yes, including cardboard worktops!) and we genuinely need your opinion before we start the renovation.

This week at Maison du Potager was a real emotional rollercoaster 🎄😬

What started with a very unpleasant sewage smell quickly turned into urgent plumbing repairs — never what you want when renovating an old French farmhouse. We tried to keep things festive as Christmas arrived, with a locally sourced tree from the Morvan and minimal decorations… which Tommy the cat immediately claimed as his own hiding place 🐾🎄

There were some real wins too — progress in the garden, a beautiful woven hedge, and finally starting the upstairs window installation. But just as we thought we were moving forward, we hit a major setback that stopped everything in its tracks.

Renovation life isn’t always pretty, and this episode shows the reality — the good moments, the stress, and the tough decisions when the budget runs out.

✨ Ever seen wood chop itself?
We turned our kindling prep into stop-motion magic — pallets pulling apart, saws spinning on their own and sawdust flying like witchcraft.
And just when you think it’s all done by ghosts… Ben appears for the final power shot to split the wood himself.

✨ Celebrating Ben’s 40th ✨
Last night we pulled off the perfect surprise — gathering some of our favourite expat friends and our lovely village neighbours for a night to remember. ❤️

A huge thank you to for their incredible hospitality and beautiful attention to detail. The whole evening was filled with laughter, music and so much joy. 🥂🎉

🎈 HAPPY 40th BIRTHDAY 🎈

The day has finally arrived, that our Ben has been longing for. He has worked incredibly hard to get to here because not only is it his 40th Birthday but he is now officially a pensioner 👴🏻 ✈️

We are all incredibly lucky and grateful to have this clever and determined man in our lives ❤️

So Ben, you may enjoy your retirement but not too much because we have a house to renovate 😘

Another week at the farmhouse… and it’s been a journey. 😅

This episode has a bit of everything:
🪟 Nathan proudly showing off his freshly cleaned windows (it finally happened!).
🪵 A dramatic wood-barn clean-up and some questionable kindling-chopping techniques.
🔨 A throwback to last week when the lovely Frockells helped us replace not one but TWO windows!
🎨 Five window frames varnished for the upstairs bedrooms — because those dark old rooms need all the light they can get.
🏰 And then, because renovation life is never straightforward, we ran away to Châteauneuf-en-Auxois for cobbled streets, creamy stone houses and views that could cure any DIY meltdown.

We finish with a very casual “just-removing-a-roof-tile-from-some-ladders” moment. As you do.
