When Glen Hansard's label reached out to us in 2019 about doing something with him while he was staying at the Irish Cultural Center in Paris for a month, it wasn’t just to film him performing. Glen wanted time to talk, time to experience and share the city, and time to reflect on his creative journey with people he had recently met: Nadia, a Parisian guide, and three Iranian musicians, the Khoshravesh brothers.
In a world where the music industry is constantly swallowing us whole —always moving fast, always chasing the next thing, shuttling artists from one promotional appearance to another— we’re usually fortunate enough to actually spend time with the artists we film for our Take Away Shows. More often than not, we become an unscripted pause for them in the middle of an exhausting world tour or promotional trip: a moment when everyone slows down, gets to know one another, and creates together as spontaneously as possible.
Glen took that idea one step further by slowing things down even more. That’s how we ended up spending two days with him instead of just a couple of hours —listening, talking, watching him interact with a city we know so well, and with new collaborators he had only just met. And of course, singing, playing, laughing, and occasionally losing himself in the spontaneity of those organic performances.
He allowed us to witness a genuine creative and human moment, to capture the essence of his relationship with music in a unique film in which he offers a glimpse into his artistic journey and speaks about his determination to resist becoming banal.
Glen was anything but banal. We will dearly miss his voice, his kindness, and his extraordinary talent 🤍
