The “EDWARD YANG RETROUVÉ”，curated by Wafa Ghermani, Taiwanese Cinema Specialist and Film Studies Doctoral Degree Scholar at Taiwan National Central University, is bringing works of the highly respected Asian cinema master Edward Yang to the big screen at Cinémathèque.
"Edward moved around many times and went to study in the United States when he's young. Eventually, he settled in Taiwan in 1980. At that time, the Taiwanrse New Wave was booming, and he quickly threw himself into it, shooting four astonishing works (including "Taipei Story" starring his good friend Hou Hsiao-hsien). Later, he completed "A Brighter Summer Day", which is regarded as one of the most touching films in the world - a bittersweet chronicle of youth and a profound depiction of growth and confusion in turbulent times. Ten years later, "Yi Yi" moved countless audiences and won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. His film career was short but extremely brilliant. Unfortunately, he passed away at the age of 59 due to illness."
