World of Warcraft has a legitimate claim to being one of the most important PC games ever released.
Released in 2004, Blizzard Entertainment took the world of Warcraft and transformed it into a massive online role-playing experience. Building on the lore established in Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Warcraft II, and Warcraft III, World of Warcraft gave players the chance to step directly into Azeroth and explore it alongside thousands of others.
The first thing that stood out was the scale. From the forests of Elwynn to the deserts of Durotar, the snowy peaks of Dun Morogh, and the haunted lands of Tirisfal Glades, Azeroth felt huge, alive, and full of possibility. For many players, simply walking into a major city like Stormwind or Orgrimmar for the first time was unforgettable.
Gameplay was just as compelling. Players created their own hero, chose a race and class, completed quests, explored dungeons, fought monsters, and gained new abilities as they leveled up. Whether you were playing as a warrior, mage, rogue, priest, hunter, or another classic class, every character had a clear identity and role within the world.
The game also stood out because of its social design. Guilds, parties, raids, auction houses, battlegrounds, and in-game chat turned World of Warcraft into more than just a game. It became a place where friendships were formed, rivalries developed, and entire communities spent years adventuring together.
World of Warcraft also made the MMORPG genre more accessible than ever before. While online role-playing games existed long before it, Blizzard polished the formula with smoother questing, approachable controls, strong art direction, and a world that rewarded both casual exploration and serious endgame dedication.
Perhaps the greatest compliment you can give World of Warcraft is how influential it became. It set the standard for modern online RPGs, shaped PC gaming culture for years, and became one of the most recognizable and successful games in the history of the medium.
More than twenty years later, World of Warcraft remains a landmark title. Whether you remember your first character, your first dungeon run, or simply the feeling of stepping..
