For writer , dinner at her father’s house was as much about the hours before food hit the table than the (usually beef-based) food itself. He never served a meal on time and, in the end, the waiting was worth it.

In the touching personal essay featured in Issue 07: Food is ritual, contributor Caitlin Walsh Miller takes us into the hospital waiting room during her father’s last days, where he made her and her siblings wait one last time.

For her feature about the time-honoured rituals involved in Indian coffee growing amid climate change upheaveal, writer made it personal.

Payal took us to the sustainable coffee farm of her childhood in the Western Ghats, where her parents still grow the often-tempermental crop. Geeta Nanaiah Pereira and Dr. Anand Pereira have the process down to a science, which is detailed in the latter’s book, Ecofriendly Coffee. So grab a cup and come along for a tour of their lush grounds.

In Issue 07: Food is Ritual, the athlete told writer that her family owns a franchise and, when it comes to post-tournament breakfast, Dawn likes to customize. She opts for Louis the Undecided, which includes a crêpe with chocolate, bananas, strawberries, and whipped cream, with potatoes on the side. Then, she usually adds caramelized onions, mushrooms, beans, sausage and scrambled eggs. A true breakfast of champions 🏅🥞🥔🍓🍖🍳🫘🧅

February 7 was Grenada’s Independence Day, and plenty celebrated with a helping of the country’s national dish, oil down.

Along with plenty of rich coconut-infused and spiced flavours, the layered dish packs in history, ingredients that speak to years of colonialism mixed with indigenous traditions, and salvery. In Issue 07: Food is Ritual, writer connects with her Caribbean roots around a simmering pot of the goods, before digging in.

In Issue 07: Food is Ritual (now almost sold out!), writer takes us to his home province of Nova Scotia and gives us the inside scoop on a summer treat that has a geriatric twist and serious cultural staying power.
