“Mental health, a journey to inner peace”, by for PAUL•E “Evolve” issue.
The Covid-19 pandemic has, however, increased our society’s awareness of mental health issues. We now understand that it is just as important as our physical health”, observes Aude Caria, psychol- ogist and Director of Psycom, a public organization that provides information about mental health. “This has been observed in students and children as well as pro- fessionals”.
In 2021, between July and October, the incidence of burnout increased by 25%, according to Empreinte Humaine, a firm specialized in psychosocial risks prevention. In fact, the firm estimates that as many as 2.5 million French employees are affected. Burnout occurs when our high-pressure, hyper-com- petitive success-driven society combines with so much uncertainty.
Such general internal suffering is indicative of our frustration with the prerequisite models and a need to break out of these constraints. Taking care of your mental health means expressing a desire to liberate yourself from the codes that construct our lives.
As you progress along your journey to freedom and are able to make your own choices, taking care of your mental health becomes, to some extent, a way to get to know yourself better, to find internal autonomy, and choose your own path. “We have a need to find meaning and question our decisions. This becomes a priority. Paying attention to mental health has become more common today because it helps us balance our lives and our values”, claims Sfez.
Inner peace thus provides us with psychological and moral independence, so that we may grow and mature.
This mental independence also requires an ability to say “no”, to set boundaries for both yourself and others.
You can take any number of avenues on your journey to mental health. Indeed, there is no universal remedy. Talking and externalizing is already a good first step.
