Alief Snaps Up Worldwide Rights to ‘Luna Rosa,’ Debuts Teaser Ahead of SXSW London Premiere (EXCLUSIVE)

By Anna Marie de la Fuente

U.K.-French film company Alief has pounced on the worldwide sales rights to “Luna Rosa: The 7th Ascension of Atabey,” the fourth feature by Puerto Rican multi-hyphenate Omar Rodríguez-López, frontman for Grammy-winning band, The Mars Volta.

“This is his most cohesive, fully narrative film yet,” Alief co-partner Miguel Angel Govea told Variety, adding: “Omar pulls a magic trick with his visually and aurally stunning film, managing to pull us in with striking images.”

A meld of sci-fi and dystopian genres, “Luna Rosa” is set in Borinquen, the Indigenous Taíno name for Puerto Rico. It follows Zur’na (played by Flora Sylvestre), who ventures into enemy territories controlled by American colonial forces in search of her missing brother. Through her journey, Rodríguez-López critiques the enduring effects of American imperialism, drawing on influences from classic Latin American cinema and cult B-movies. The result is a pulsating world filled with intricate rituals, mind control and menacing holograms.

Alief has shared its teaser in exclusivity with Variety. The company is already fielding offers from Spain, Colombia, Argentina and the U.K. while Mexico’s Piano is distributing it in Mexico.

SXSW London will host the film’s U.K. premiere on June 3 as part of its official selection. “The film is exactly the sort of intersection of sensibilities and artforms that we want to champion at the inaugural SXSW London,” said the festival’s head of screen, Anna Bogutskaya.

Pic was shot in black and white in Mexico and features a score composed by Rodríguez-López and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ guitarist John Frusciante, who has contributed to some of The Mars Volta’s albums.

Glorious Summer’ Trailer: Alief Boards Sales On Polish Experimental Drama Ahead Of SXSW Debut

EXCLUSIVE: Here’s a timely trailer debut as female empowerment is championed around the world on International Women’s Day.

Alief has acquired world sales rights to Polish multi-disciplinary artistic duo Helena Ganjalyan and Bartosz Szpak’s first feature Glorious Summer as it premieres in the Global sidebar of SXSW. Deadline got a first look at the experimental film.

Set against the backdrop of a Renaissance palace, the drama revolves around three female residents whose every need is met apart from their desire for freedom and self-determination. As cracks appear in their seemingly idyllic existence, the trio develop a “touch language” to express things cannot be said out loud and secretly practice how to die as their ticket to “another place”.

Alief president Brett Walker and partner Miguel Angel Govea will are presenting the film to buyers at SXSW.

“SXSW is a true discovery festival, and it is an honour to represent fresh European voices and a privilege to premiere at this world-renowned platform. Glorious Summer is an adventurous dystopian indie that confronts deep fears.” said Walker.

Alief co-partner Miguel Angel Govea added: “Glorious Summer evoked memories of fantastic retro futurist midnight movies. We are delighted to be representing the film and to be working with a truly great team of filmmakers.”

The movie is produced by Maria Gołoś & Monika Matuszewska at Rozbrat Films and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Romas Zabarauskas’ neo-Nazi thriller ‘The Activist’ boarded for sales (exclusive)

By Ellie Calnan

UK-French sales agent Alief has boarded Romas Zabarauskas’ neo-Nazi thriller The Activist for international sales.

The Lithuanian-language feature centres around a man who infiltrates a neo-Nazi group to find out who killed his boyfriend. Alief has unveiled a first look at the film (pictured above).

It is the third title in Zabarauskas’ q***r trilogy following 2020’s The Lawyer and 2023’s The Writer.

Lithuanian actor Robertas Petraitis, who was recently selected for Tallinn Black Nights Stars 2024, stars in The Activist. Zabarauskas wrote the screenplay with Marc David Jacobs and Vitalija Lapina, and produced with Glenn Elliott and Gabrielė Misevičiūtė.

“Modern far-right has successfully locked in unexpected allies and divided our societies. It’s disappointing. All feelings are valid here,” said the director. “And yet, we don’t have the luxury to despair.

“Liberal democracies can and will work as long as there are brave activists defending them. This is what The Activist is about.”

The film was presented at Cannes Market as part of a Tallinn Black Nights showcase.

Alief Snags ‘Horizonte‘ by ‘Land and Shade’ Camera d’Or Winner César Augusto Acevedo, Bows Trailer (EXCLUSIVE)

By Anna Marie de la Fuente

Alief has boarded supernatural drama “Horizonte” by Colombia’s César Augusto Acevedo, winner of the 2015 Cannes Camera d’ Or for his debut feature “Land and Shade” (“La tierra y la sombra”). “Horizonte” is Acevedo’s sophomore feature, which had its world premiere at the 49th Toronto Film Festival in early September.

“We have been fans of Cesar Augusto since his first film, ‘Land and Shade,’” said Alief’s Miguel Angel Govea who described “Horizonte” as a “solid story of regret and redemption.”

“We were drawn by Acevedo’s lyrical screenplay, mesmerizing visuals and the standout performances by Chile’s grande dame, Paulina Garcia (Sebastian Lelio’s ‘Gloria’) and Colombian leading man Claudio Cataño, who stars in Netflix’s upcoming ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude,’” said Govea who said that Alief first eyed the drama at the 2024 Toulouse Cinélatino Films in Progress 43 where it won the Grand Prix Cinema en Construction prize.
