The window is ready! We will be signing books at Smith and Son today!!

Big news! We’ve taken over the whole storefront window at Smith and Son on the iconic rue de Rivoli. Lina painted a portrait of Sophie, the heroine of our new children’s book, framed it - and now it’s on display for the next couple of weeks! Carrying that thing on the Metro and across the streets of Paris was an adventure!

On Saturday July 25 we will do a book signing there from 5pm to 7pm. Come and say hi, it might get busy with passing tourists, but id love to see some regular names and faces in the mix!!

I heard the sad news that Adrienne Charles in Tasmania, the self-proclaimed oldest earful Tower listener, has passed away.

Adrienne wasn’t just a regular follower of this channel, she was quite vocal in her emails to me over the years, sending me messages with little updates from her own life.

As the years passed, she’d often add “you don’t need to reply to this”, and she’d tell me about her family, her own children’s book, her cross stitching projects and so on.

When I finally did an event in Hobart, Tasmania, Adrienne was the first to show up and was every bit as lovely as she had been in all those emails.

Funnily enough, when driving through Tasmania once with my wife Lina, we passed a suburb with a name that was familiar to me. How did I recognise that place, I thought. I quickly realised it was the place she’d mentioned in her emails. On a total whim, I tracked down her address and we knocked on her door. She was absolutely floored that we showed up and invited us in for tea.

I can count on one finger how many times I’ve rocked up unannounced at the home of one of the podcast listeners (that’s right, just once), but it somehow seems fitting that it was Adrienne’s door we knocked on.

A lovely lady and a great example of truly unforgettable community ties.

Rest in peace Adrienne - it was lovely to know you.

This wasn’t just any old night at the museum.

On a very warm evening, in the final hours of the Great Paris Heatwave, Lina and I walked into the stunning museum. If you don’t know it, it’s an aristocratic mansion in the 8th district, featuring the incredible art collection of a very wealthy family.

But tonight, it was a different kind of art. We were there for an opera, played out across different rooms of the mansion/museum. For us, it was La Traviata, featuring Champagne and guided tours in the intervals and intermissions. Truly breathtaking show by Opera a Palazzo Paris, merci for the invitation.

When we left, after days of extreme heat in Paris, gentle raindrops turned into an electric thunderstorm, enough to cause any and all Parisians to burst into delirious joy. If I could sing in Italian I’d have been doing some opera myself. We avoided the rain for a cocktail at the art nouveau maxims bar, not bad itself, and reflected on an unforgettable night. Chatting with Edward Chisholm about his new book Murder in Paris ‘68.

This guy has done it again. I loved A Waiter in Paris. Now he’s only gone and written a gripping account of Alain Delon’s intriguing connection to a murder in the 1960s.

Edward joined me in my studio, this time by the seine river beneath the Quai des Orfèvres police HQ, to talk about it all. On the pod now - and seek his book! It’s great. Merci Edward Chisholm

Another big day: Sophie in Paris hits the Left Bank. We spent the day hand delivering our new children’s book to some more of our favorite shops.

We also carried most of the leftover boxes to our basement - which was perhaps the biggest achievement of them all!

It has been an extraordinary ride bringing this book to the great shops of Paris - with so many booksellers genuinely excited about it, and almost every single one of them stocking more than any of our previous books. Could we be on to something here? I think so…
