Just like in any community you will find a place of worship, a school, shops, restaurants, and people from different cultures all coexisting and living in harmony. The Calais Camp (The Jungle) is no different. Even though it is considered as an illegal settlement by the government, it still remains a place where people have managed to build a community despite all the hardship they are faced with.

So we walked passed a spot in the Jungle where people could come and have tea or coffee, play games or musical instruments, and have access to internet. We ended up spending almost 2 hours in this particular spot talking and playing games with people from Sudan, Pakistan, and Eritrea amongst others.

We soon realised that this is where people came to socialise, be happy and ultimately escape their harsh realities. Despite everything the people in the jungle are going through, including increasingly cold weather, they all welcomed us with such warmth and open arms to join them - either to throw a Frisbee around, play connect 4, juggle a football or simply to chat to us about their future plans.

Staying upbeat given their circumstances puts a lot of perspective into life.

A few weeks back Katie Sian and Yazzie Min got in touch about going to Calais. Before that they managed to raise about £5000 in a week or so. With the money raised they bought food, shoes, sleeping bags, etc to deliver and donate to people in need.

Without much planning, Sageer headed to Calais to help in any way possible. Initially the plan was to film and take pictures of what is going on there - from volunteers helping sort all of the donations in the warehouse , to heading into the camp (The Jungle) and documenting the terrible conditions that people live in.

However, instead of focusing on the plight of those in the Jungle, we decided to take a different approach and focus on the unbreakable spirit, the generosity, and the warmth of people that ironically never seems to make the news.

With no frills, no Hollywood production, this video is about a short encounter with Jan. Although it doesn't capture the entire conversation, it does encapsulate the spirit and the warmth of someone who has walked all the way from Afghanistan to Europe and still remains upbeat (as much as one can be) about the present and the future.

So over the past week or so we have been working with the good folks at The Grand·Kids Collective on a passion project. After much brainstorming, coffees, metro rides, and location scouting, we came up with a really cool concept and shot the video last night. Super exciting stuff😁

We are going to be sharing some behind-the-scenes photos with you throughout this week while we work on editing all the footage. As the week goes on hopefully you get a better idea of what the passion project is about.
