When we asked what feels most intimidating about making a photo book, someone answered, “People being interested in it. lol.”

Fair enough 😅

Making a book means putting something you care about into the world without knowing how the world will respond. And if your goal is to sell your book, of course audience matters. You need to think realistically about who the book is for, how you’ll reach them and how many copies it makes sense to print.

BUT I don’t think sales are the only measure of whether a photo book is worth making. Some books preserve a place or a period of someone’s life. Some bring years of work together in a way that finally makes sense. Some are made for a small community of people who will understand exactly what they’re looking at.

The point? A book doesn’t need a huge audience to matter.

One of the beautiful things about making photographs today is that, for the first time, almost anyone can make a photo book.

You don’t need a publisher to discover you. You don’t need to win a competition. You don’t need someone else to decide your work is worthy of being printed and bound.

Some might argue that’s not entirely a good thing. 😂 And sure, not every collection of photographs needs to become a book. But I love that the choice is ours.

If you have a body of work you care about and a reason for wanting to put it into physical form, the tools are there. You can edit it, sequence it, design it, print it and put it into the world yourself.

That doesn’t mean making a good photo book is easy. There’s a lot that happens between a pile of photographs and the finished thing. But that part can be learned.

That’s exactly what Bob and I teach in How to Self-Publish a Photo Book, drawing on what we learned making Where the Streets Lead.

I think we need to democratize what it means to be an artist, because the more people who view themselves as creating and appreciating art, the better we will be as a society. So yes, you too are an artist, whether or not you’ve ever touched a brush or a camera or a guitar. You don’t have to live in Greenwich Village chugging ci******es at the local cafĂ© while writing your memoirs in a beret to be an artist. Living life with any appreciation for the beauty we draw from an increasingly connected yet stunningly disjointed world makes you an artist. Singing in the shower makes you an artist. Trimming the hedges makes you an artist. Writing down your feelings from the day so you can look back and reflect on them is art. When John Baer died in 1994, his son Andrew discovered four boxes in the basement containing prints, contact sheets and envelopes filled with negatives. He took them home, but it would be another 27 years before he and his wife, Megan, decided it was finally time to take a closer look.

As Andrew puts it, working with his father’s photographs over the past several years has been a way of “almost recovering” his father’s memory. And it’s allowed him to see his father, and even his mother, Louise, as people beyond the roles he had known them in growing up.

Today, that work continues through the johnbaerarchive , a nonprofit created to preserve the collection and find new ways for people to engage with it. John’s photographs have already inspired writing, painting and even ballet, and Andrew hopes there are uses for the archive that he and Megan haven’t imagined yet.
