✈️ Controversial Take: What Do Pilot Stripes Really Mean?
Those gold stripes on a pilot’s shoulders aren’t just for decoration—they’re a visible sign of rank, experience, and responsibility in the cockpit.
🔹 1 stripe: Cadet / Trainee
🔹 2 stripes: Second Officer / Junior Pilot
🔹 3 stripes: First Officer
🔹 4 stripes: Captain — the pilot in command
Of course, the system can vary from one airline to another, particularly for the lower ranks. But four stripes are widely recognised as the Captain’s insignia.
So next time you board a plane, look at the pilots’ epaulettes. 👀✈️ And remember: the person wearing four stripes is usually the one ultimately responsible for the aircraft and everyone on board.
Would you trust a pilot with fewer stripes just as much as a Captain? Let the debate begin. 👇
