Hamburger steaks with onion gravy... ππ
For the Hamburger Steaks:
1 lb (450g) ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 large egg
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
For the Onion Gravy:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Make the Onion Gravy:
In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized, about 10-12 minutes.
Sprinkle flour over the onions and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
