Flaneur Magazine

Flaneur Magazine FRAGMENTS OF A STREET Flaneur presents one street per issue. The magazine is aware of its subjectivity.

The magazine embraces the street's complexity, its layers and its fragmented nature through
a literary approach. It creates meaningful correlations among places, stories, people and objects that aren't necessarily related. ISSUE 07: SAO PAULO (Out Fall 2017)

With this series, we’re examining the Olympics’ impact on Paris and its inhabitants, connecting them to questions we’ve explored in our latest Paris issue. As road infrastructure has been reorganized to accommodate traffic for the games, we draw parallels with the Périphérique, a vision of speed that was never fully realized, and peek behind the curtain to understand what it takes to manage and maintain Europe’s most used road.

Read about the Périphérique as an infrastructure of noise and time in curating editor Anabelle Lacroix’s piece “Breaking the Continuum,” and ’s full interview of Stéphane Lagrange, the head of the unit responsible for the Périphérique, in our Paris issue.

We’ve been taking a look at the impact of the Olympics on Paris and its inhabitants, through a deep dive of our latest issue on Paris.

Olympic preparations have accelerated the gentrification of the northern suburbs of Paris. The demolition of housing to make way for newer and more expensive units is pushing local populations further away and what is called “urban development”, does not include the most vulnerable of population in its plans.

Read about the struggle for housing and home in Rubble of Memories, a photography essay by , and reflections on the mechanism of gentrification in Archipelago: A Case for Care with .chabani, in our Paris issue.

A little introduction for the newcomers here! Flaneur Magazine is a site-specific, multidisciplinary project that zooms in on one street in a different city for each issue. Our team lives on-site, connects with people, chooses a street, and upon their return, a long-term collaboration starts with local artists, writers, inhabitants, architects, activists, etc. who create new work for the magazine. Each issue is unique and peels back the hidden layers of the street. We attempt to use a single microcosm to tell universal stories. We’ve been to Berlin, Leipzig, Montréal, Rome, Athens, Moscow, São Paulo, Taipei and Paris.

A piece of Issue 09 ~ Archipelago (P. 112-121)

Architect Meriem Chabani, editor-in-chief of the The Funambulist Léopold Lambert, curating editor Alix Hugonnier and our co-editor-in-chief Fabian Saul discussed whether the Périph' as a border was still a relevant idea, how the market and police violence define what are centers and what are peripheries, and how communal care of public space should be a given. The result is this fascinating, free-flowing interview piece.

A piece of Issue 09 ~ 35.04 (P. 128-155)

2 weeks and 1 film roll per day - those are the working conditions photographer Alassan Diawara set himself as he approached people in waiting around the Périph'. He captured gazes, interactions and gestures in this inhabited non-space.

A piece of Issue 09 ~ Windows (P. 3-7)
How to start an issue that took more than 2 years to make, that happened during the pandemic and that's about a space particularly unadapted to flaneuring? By looking at the Boulevard Périphérique from all the windows that opens to it, by trying to grasp it through scattered facts, by experiencing it and slowly entering into its multiple and complex realities.
