A Sunday at Père-Lachaise, and the end of summer is starting to show.

The jay is not eating those acorns, it is burying them, a hundred metres away, and the ones it forgets are how the oaks here get planted.

📍 Jardin naturel Pierre-Emmanuel, Paris 20e
In the heart of the Jardin naturel Pierre-Emmanuel, springtime comes alive with frantic parental dedication. This fledgling Blue Tit, still displaying its soft yellowish cheeks and eager begging posture, relies on a ceaseless conveyor belt of food. A single pair of Blue T**s can deliver up to eight hundred caterpillars a day to satisfy their voracious brood. The yellowish tint in the chick's plumage is directly tied to its diet, absorbing lutein carotenoids from the specific caterpillars found on native foliage. Watching this vital exchange in an untamed corner of the 20th arrondissement is a powerful testament to the ecological value of urban micro-reserves.

Europe's tallest sand dune is full of tunnels.

Arcachon. From a distance the dune looks empty: a bare slope of sand, gulls sliding along the ridge, the ocean behind. Then you get closer and the face of the sand is drilled with holes.

Sand Martins. Each pair digs a burrow up to a metre deep into the sand with beak and feet, and hundreds of them nest side by side in the same wall.

Which raises a problem worth thinking about: how does a parent coming back with a beakful of insects find the right hole, in a wall of identical holes, in a colony of hundreds?

By voice. Sand Martin chicks each have their own vocal signature, and the parents learn it. The colony sounds like one dry, continuous rattle — but inside that noise, every family is calling its own name.

Above them, the gulls: herring, yellow-legged, great black-backed, riding the updraft against the dune face without a single wingbeat.

🎧 Save this post, headphones on: a martin colony is one of the densest walls of sound on the French coast.

🇬🇧 Five days at La Baume, Provence. A Short-toed Snake Eagle roosting above the chapel, frogs, butterflies and wagtails all around. Fun fact: the chick pulls half-swallowed snakes out of its parent's throat. Sound piece coming soon.

The Kings and Queens of the Verdon 🦅⛰️

More than twenty Griffon Vultures circling above our heads, as if the sky belonged to them. It does. They are the kings and queens of this place, and watching them soar over their own home was genuinely moving. Almost three metres of wingspan, barely a wingbeat: they sail the thermal updrafts climbing the limestone walls of the gorge. Yet they had vanished, poisoned and persecuted, gone from the Verdon by the early 1900s. Reintroduced from 1999, they are home again by the hundreds. One detail for the sound artist: this giant is nearly voiceless. No song, no flight call; the loudest thing about a griffon is the wind tearing through its feathers when it passes close. Wildlife photography and field recording for La Science Musicale.

A brief stop on a wooden post and a vintage bicycle. Is this Black Redstart an old cyclist coming back to inspect the frame, or simply a relentless hunter taking advantage of human metal? Originally a dweller of high alpine cliffs, this bird views handlebars, pedals, and fence posts as perfect artificial crags. Before pouncing on small insects on the ground, it constantly vibrates its rusty tail, a nervous visual signal designed to test its surroundings and keep potential competitors at a distance.

Père Lachaise Cemetery, right in my local 20th arrondissement. This morning marked my very first volunteer outing with the LPO, and what a delightful experience it was. A peaceful time spent watching wildlife thrive among the historic monuments: energetic flocks of t**s, a chatterbox woodpecker echoing through the canopy, and ever-eager treecreepers spiraling up the bark. The highlight was a surprisingly quiet moment: a carrion crow standing just inches away from a lounging cat, completely unbothered by our presence. Pure joy to take part in this bird monitoring and connect with urban nature.
Did you know? Unlike nuthatches, treecreepers cannot walk down tree trunks headfirst. They rely on their stiff central tail feathers as a structural prop to climb upward. Once they reach the top of a tree, they must flutter down to the base of the next one to start their search all over again.

📍 Parc du Marquenterre, Somme (80)

A journey through the shifting waters and coastal winds of the Somme Bay, where the landscape opens like a sanctuary. It begins with the heavy wooden observatory, a threshold between human curiosity and the wetlands where Cygnet families glide through the reeds. High above, the White Stork stands as an ancient sentinel atop its chaotic nest, while the Little Egret fishes with delicate, deliberate steps in the shallows. Nearby, the Great Cormorant stretches its dark wings to dry in the breeze, a living sail against the light. Past the marsh, the meadows host the great, shaggy silhouettes of Highland Cattle, living relics grazing alongside butterflies. Deep in the coastal scrub, the rare Crested Tit reveals its graphic crown, the European Turtle Dove coos its soft, rhythmic song, and finally, a favorite of all: the Common Linnet, a vibrant throat singing its sweet, complex melody into the salt air.

This proud little silhouette standing on the edge of the monument is the Black Redstart. A true child of the cliffs, it has found a perfect substitute for its ancestral rocky home among the stone sepulchers of Père Lachaise. Having spent the spring in its company, you surely noticed its unique habit of shivering its rusty red tail every time it alights. Its song is a mechanical marvel: a brief melodic phrase followed by a strange, unmistakable scratching sound, like crushed paper or a sharp acoustic friction. It is a tireless performer that turns the mineral quiet of the cemetery into its personal amphitheater.

Whether perched on the ancient stones of Pont-Neuf, tucked into the leafy sanctuaries of Père-Lachaise, or observing the streets from a brick ledge in the 20th arrondissement, these birds share a unique destiny: they are the true tenants of the Parisian skies. Living in Paris means decoding human structures. To a Grey Heron or a Gull by the Seine, the classic stone bridges are perfect hunting cliffs; to a Tit or a Crow in Ménilmontant, a mossy tomb or a vertical brick wall becomes a vital urban territory. They do not merely adapt to our asphalt and stone, they rewrite the architecture of the city, bringing a wild, frantic rhythm to the mineral heart of Paris.
