A review of one of the most memorable event of late 2025: the Seminar for Arabian Studies!

During the three days of the 58th Seminar for Arabian Studies, researchers and scholars came together to exchange ideas and information about the archaeology and heritage of the entire Arabian Peninsula. Dr Aurore Lambert and Chloé Girardi represented Eveha International at this important gathering, contributing to the ongoing dialogue.

The Zayed National Museum | متحف زايد الوطني provided a wonderful environment for the seminar, with its striking architecture and carefully curated exhibitions creating an inspiring backdrop for scholarly exchange. Special thanks go to Dr Peter Magee and the Zayed National Museum staff for their gracious hospitality.

A special highlight was the presentation by Chloé Girardi, “Worship in the Shadows: A Funerary Shrine in the Lihyanite Necropolis of Dadan (Al-ʿUlā, KSA)”. Her research reveals fascinating insights into the funerary and religious practices at Dadan (دادان), the ancient capital of the Dedanite and Lihyanite kingdoms. This work is part of the Dadan Archaeological Project, a collaboration between CNRS, the Royal Commission for AlUla, and AFALULA, co-directed by Dr Jérôme Rohmer and Dr Abdulrahman Al-Suhaibani.

Our sincere thanks to all organisers, speakers, and participants for making this event such a success. We are proud that Eveha International has been associated with research of such a high academic standard and with supporting archaeological research that enriches our understanding of the ancient civilizations and cultural legacy of the entire Arabian Peninsula.

Retour sur l’un des temps forts de la fin 2025 : le Seminar for Arabian Studies !
Au cours des trois jours du 58e du séminaire à Abu Dhabi, des chercheurs et des universitaires se sont réunis pour échanger des idées et des informations sur l'archéologie et le patrimoine de toute la péninsule arabique. Le Dr Aurore Lambert et Chloé Girardi ont représenté Eveha International lors de cet important rassemblement, contribuant ainsi au dialogue en cours.

Le Musée national Zayed | متحف زايد الوطني a offert un cadre magnifique pour le séminaire, avec son architecture saisissante et ses expositions soigneusement organisées, créant une toile de fond inspirante pour les échanges scientifiques. Nous remercions tout particulièrement le Dr Peter Magee et le personnel du Musée national Zayed pour leur aimable hospitalité.

La présentation de Chloé Girardi, intitulée « Worship in the Shadows: A Funerary Shrine in the Lihyanite Necropolis of Dadan (Al-ʿUlā, KSA) » (Le culte dans l'ombre : un sanctuaire funéraire dans la nécropole lihyanite de Dadan (Al-ʿUlā, Arabie saoudite)), a été particulièrement remarquée. Ses recherches révèlent des informations fascinantes sur les pratiques funéraires et religieuses à Dadan (دادان), l'ancienne capitale des royaumes de Dedan et de Lihyan. Ce travail s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet archéologique de Dadan, une collaboration entre le CNRS, la Commission royale pour AlUla et l'AFALULA, codirigée par le Dr Jérôme Rohmer et le Dr Abdulrahman Al-Suhaibani.

Nous adressons nos sincères remerciements à tous les organisateurs, intervenants et participants qui ont contribué au succès de cet événement. [Seminar]
A week dedicated to marine invertebrates! 2/2
The 4th "Interactions between human societies and marine invertebrates through time" seminar was held on the 4th of December at the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle.
Our colleague Nicolas Morand from Eveha international, also an associate member of the BioArch team (UMR 7209), co-organized this year's event with Caroline Mougne and Clémence Pagnoux, two other members of the team.
The conference brought together researchers from the CNRS, the MNHN, local authorities, and rescue archaeology as well as specialists from the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and the University of Athens.
During this day, they were able to present and discuss their research results on marine invertebrates in Western Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, and the Arabian Peninsula from the Neolithic period to the Modern era.

Le 4 décembre, les IVe rencontres, "Interactions sociétés humaines et invertébrés marins au cours du temps", se sont déroulées au Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle.
Notre collègue Nicolas Morand d’Eveha international, également membre associé de l’UMR BioArch (UMR 7209) du Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, a co-organisé cette année cet événement avec Caroline Mougne et Clémence Pagnoux, deux autres membres de l’équipe.
Ces rencontres ont réuni des chercheurs du CNRS, du MNHN, des collectivités territoriales et de l’archéologie préventive ainsi que des spécialistes de l’Institut royal des Sciences naturelles de Belgique et de l’université d’Athènes.
Au cours de cette journée, ils ont pu présenter et discuter de leurs résultats de recherche sur les invertébrés marins en Europe occidentale, dans le bassin méditerranéen et en Péninsule Arabique du Néolithique à l’époque moderne.

[Conference]
A week dedicated to marine invertebrates! 1/2

From the 5th to the 7th of December, the conference "Cross-cultural interaction in Egypt through the ages" took place at the American University in Cairo (AUC).

On this occasion, our colleague Nicolas Morand (Eveha international) presented online, along with his colleague Mohga Abd El-Kawy (Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities), a paper entitled: “From Ancient Tables to Modern Kitchens: Tracing Alexandrian Marine Cuisine Across Time”. They thus examined the importance of marine invertebrates in Alexandrian culture, from the founding of the city to the Ptolemaic era, through their research combining archaeozoological and ethnographic data.

Du 5 au 7 décembre avait lieu la conférence "Cross-cultural interaction in Egypt through the ages" à l’université américaine du Caire. À cette occasion, notre collègue Nicolas Morand (Eveha international) a présenté en ligne, avec sa collègue Mohga Abd El-Kawy (Ministère du tourisme et des antiquités) une communication intitulée : « From Ancient Tables to Modern Kitchens: Tracing Alexandrian Marine Cuisine Across Time ». Ils ont ainsi questionné l’importance des invertébrés marins dans la culture alexandrine, de la fondation de la ville à l’époque ptolémaïque, au travers de leurs recherches regroupant des données archéozoologiques et ethnographiques.

[Kurdistan]
This autumn, Eveha International returned to the Kunara archaeological site in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Our colleague Michaël Seigle, an archaeozoologist, is conducting a study of the fauna, while our colleague Marie Antoine is overseeing topographical and photogrammetric surveys.

This mission, which began in 2012, is led by Aline Tenu, a researcher at the CNRS (UMR 7041 ArScAn) and director of the French Archaeological Mission of Peramagron. Following a one-year hiatus, work has thus resumed, enabling a deeper understanding of this significant site in the Kingdom of Lubullum to be achieved.
This year, the team also welcomed several schools from Souleymanieh, introducing students to the field of archaeology.

The project is supported by the Excavation Commission of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

[Kurdistan]

Cet automne, Éveha International était de retour sur le site archéologique de Kunara au Kurdistan Irakien.

Notre collègue archéozoologue Michaël Seigle y mène l’étude de la faune et notre collègue Marie Antoine est chargée des relevés topographiques et photogrammétriques.

Cette mission, débutée en 2012 est dirigée par Aline Tenu, chargée de recherche au CNRS (UMR 7041 ArScAn) et directrice de la Mission archéologique française du Peramagron. Après une année d'interruption en 2024, les travaux ont repris et permettent d'approfondir la compréhension de ce site majeur du royaume du Lubullum.
Cette année, le site a également accueilli plusieurs écoles de la ville de Souleymanieh, offrant aux élèves une découverte du métier d'archéologue.

Le projet bénéficie du soutien de la Commission des fouilles de France Diplomatie (Ministère de l'Europe et des Affaires étrangères).

The Seminar for Arabian Studies will soon be held in Abu Dhabi.

The Zayed National Museum will host this gathering of researchers from the Arabian Peninsula from December 12–14.

On this occasion, Chloé Girardi will present “Worship in the Shadows: A Funerary Shrine in the Lihyanite Necropolis of Dadan (al-ʿUlā, KSA)”.

This presentation will outline the results of research on a Lihyanite shrine established within an abandoned quarry overlooking the ancient city, conducted as part of the Dadan Archaeological Project (CNRS/RCU/Afalula).

[Bangladesh]
For the 4th time, Éveha International takes part in the Joint Bangladeshi-French archaeological mission of Mahasthangarh.
Our colleague Antoine Darchambeau is managing the excavations located in a new area of the citadel of Mahasthangarh (Bogura district) and carrying out all topographic surveys.
This project is directed by Vincent Lefèvre (Sorbonne Université) et Coline Lefrancq (CNRS-UMR 7041 ARSCAN) for the french side and by Mr. A.K.M. Syfur Rahman (Department of Archaeology).
This mission is supported by the Ministère de l'Europe et des Affaires étrangères and is part of the ERC Syn n°809994 DHARMA project.

[Uzbekistan]
A new Bronze Age and Iron Age site has been revealed in southern Uzbekistan thanks to the Kuduk Bulak Research Project!

The Project has been funded for 2 years (2024-2025) by the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS), within the framework of a collaborative partnership between Termez State University and the CNRS Archéorient Research Laboratory in Lyon (dir. Johanna Lhuillier and Shapulat Shaydullaev).

Eveha International contributes to the project from 2023 through the participation of Samara Broglia and Marie-Paule Jung, who collaborate to the excavation campaigns.

[Ouzbékistan]

Un nouveau site datant de l'âge du bronze et de l'âge du fer a été mis au jour dans le sud de l'Ouzbékistan grâce au projet de recherche Kuduk Bulak !

This year, the Commission for Archaeological Research Abroad is celebrating its 80th anniversary.

A major player in international archaeology, the Commission has led and supported a considerable number of projects around the world. This has increased knowledge of many sites and strengthened institutional and personal ties with numerous archaeological actors worldwide.

Since its creation, Éveha International has been involved in over 35 of these projects in around 20 countries.

In 2025, three excavation projects (in Guernsey, Anabta in Palestine and Mustang in Nepal) led by some of our colleagues received support from this institution!

Depuis sa création, Éveha International a pu être associés à plus de 35 de ces projets répartis dans une vingtaine de pays.

En 2025, trois projets de fouilles (île de Guernesey, Anabta en Palestine et Mustang au Népal) portés par certains de nos collègues ont bénéficié d’un soutien de cette institution !

France Diplomatie

🐄🔬 From 2021 to 2025, Clara Jeuthe (DAI Cairo) directed an archaeological excavation at Buto in the western Delta (Kafr el-Sheikh Governorate). Her team uncovered the remains of an economic and supply center belonging to a royal domain in the northwest of the site. Several building phases—including large silos and bakeries—were excavated, spanning the entire Old Kingdom. Remarkably, these structures are exceptionally well preserved, providing a unique glimpse into Nile Delta urbanism.

Archaeozoologist Nicolas Morand (Eveha International, UMR 7209 - BioArch, MNHN, Paris) began working at Buto in 2018 with the French team (directed by P. Georges-Zimmermann, P. Ballet, L. Mazou), focusing on the site's Hellenistic and Roman layers under DAIK’s hosting. Since 2022, Nicolas has joined the DAIK team to study the animal remains from the Old Kingdom levels. His research traces the long-term history of animal exploitation within this major urban center of Lower Egypt, encompassing food supply, meat processing, and craft activities over time. During the 2025 autumn mission, Nicolas completed the analysis of over 12,000 bone fragments from domestic animals, wild game, and fish, and is now preparing a publication in collaboration with the entire team.

In addition to his research, Nicolas contributed to Capacity Building by conducting a workshop for members of the local inspectorate on archaeozoology. The workshop included a theoretical session covering quantification methods, statistical approaches, and research scope, followed by a practical exercise on sorting and identifying animal remains using a reference collection. [Sudan]

Our colleague, Marie-Paule Jung, is currently staying in Cairo as part of a grant obtained from the French Section of the Sudanese Antiquities Authority (SFDAS). She is pursuing her doctoral research on housing in Nubia and Sudan during the medieval period and participating in SFDAS activities.

While there, she will have the opportunity to present her research at a conference at the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology (Ifao) this Monday 24 November at 2 p.m. (Cairo time).

[Soudan]

Notre collègue Marie-Paule Jung séjourne actuellement au Caire, dans le cadre d’une bourse obtenue auprès de la Section Française de la Direction des Antiquités du Soudan(SFDAS). Elle y poursuit ses recherches doctorales sur l’habitat en Nubie et au Soudan à la période médiévale et participe aux activités de la SFDAS.

Ce déplacement est l’occasion de présenter ses recherches lors d’une conférence, qui aura lieu à l’Institut Français d’Archéologie Orientale (Ifao), ce lundi 24 novembre à 14 heures (heure du Caire).
