CATALANS DRAGONS have begun “a new era” of signing younger players from down under by recruiting a third 24-year-old Australian for next season (writes STEVE BRADY).
Following on from the acquisition of Toby Sexton and Solomona Faataape, Les Dracs have landed prop-forward Josh Allen on a two-year-deal from Redcliffe Dolphins.
The 6’4” ex-amateur boxer who weighs in at over 17 stone will be an imposing figure in the Dragons’ pack next season and is considered to be a direct replacement for Tevita Pangai Junior who has signed for Warrington Wolves in 2026.
Allen (pictured) said, “I’m excited to be able to pursue a career with the Catalans. It is a dream and a challenge I’m keen to take on. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into pre-season and proving myself in the Super League arena."
Incredibly, the Dragons are being heavily linked with a FOURTH 24-year-old Aussie recruit in West Tigers’ winger Charlie Staines although nothing official has been confirmed at this stage.
Meanwhile, another young recruit was snapped up last week with 21-year-old prop Harvey Wilson switching from Salford Reds on a two-year contract in line with the club’s new policy of reducing the average age of the squad.
Dragons’ Chief Executive Sébastien Munoz told Catalan Media, “It is a major mission of the club under new coach Joel Tomkins to bring in younger players to reduce the overall age of the squad.
“This can be through overseas signings or continuing to promote from our youth and reserve grades.”
Munoz said the Dragons are “incredibly proud” of their junior development programme which is overseen by former club captain Rémi Casty and winger Justin Murphy and praised a fellow French club for their similar investment.
He added, “It’s the key factor for any successful club, young talented players are the basis of any successful squad.
“We feel we are contributing massively to the player talent pool in France.
“Of course, we would be happy if Toulouse Olympique could be part of Super League in future, we would be able to work together on the same page to develop the game in France.
“Like us, they emphasise how important it is to develop young French players and we already work alongside them in that respect.
“Having them in Super League would create a much bigger international dimension for the competition.
“If needed, we will help Toulouse in any way with our experience and their inclusion would be really good for the whole competition.”
Catalans' scrum-half Théo Fages is returning to where it all began, joining Pia XIII Baroudeur for 2025/26 in the FFR XIII - Fédération Française de Rugby à XIII Super XIII.
“I’m very happy to return to my family’s club that made me love this sport..." said the ex Salford Red Devils RLFC, St.Helens RLFC and Huddersfield Giants back.
This follows the decision by Dragons' second-rower Paul Séguier to join Super XIII heavyweights Carcassonne for 2025/26.
Catalans' coach Joel Tomkins said he is expecting 14 players to be leaving the club at the end of the season with a string of replacements and promotions from within expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
