Such a wonderful time of year to enjoy the flavours of The Dordogne .

Fresh walnuts, chestnuts, cep mushrooms….🌰 They’re all still in season in the Dordogne Valley! 😋

November is a wonderful time to wander through the local food markets, baskets brimming with autumn flavours 🍂

If you’re in Périgueux, don’t miss the Wednesday and Saturday markets in the old town. It’s one of the best in the region! 🧺 Grab some local cheese, a loaf of walnut bread and a few ceps for dinner... and you’ll have the taste of Dordogne Valley on your plate 🍽

Need a bit of inspiration for a heartwarming dinner with a local touch? Try a butternut soup with chestnuts, a Rocamadour goat’s cheese and walnut salad or a cep mushroom omelette 🧀🥚🥗

Bon appétit! 😁

Late afternoon sunshine and a walk through the beautiful walnut orchards behind Gontalbe . The harvest has been collected but we found a few that had been missed .

Picked up the pastries? Can you resist the temptation of a delicious gateau for later?
Having made one of the most difficult decisions you have to make on holiday at Fontalbe you are now faced with another – to gateau or not to gateau – well that’s easy – which one to choose is almost impossible. I suggest you have a look at all the options on the Mamyclafouty insta page before heading out. But here’s a quick pic of what’s on offer most days. If you want something for a special occasion message them via Instagram.

Lovely write up about Bergerac . Just half an hour away from Fontalbe .

Bergerac sits along the Dordogne River and has a relaxed, timeless feel that makes it easy to linger. The old town is full of narrow lanes, half-timbered houses, and squares where locals gather for coffee or a glass of wine. A statue of Cyrano de Bergerac stands proudly in the main square, paying tribute to the literary hero who shares its name.

Wine is part of Bergerac’s identity. The surrounding vineyards produce reds, rosés, and whites that are often overlooked next to Bordeaux but have their own depth and character. You can visit nearby estates for tastings or take a boat trip on the river to see the countryside from a different perspective.

Bergerac is especially lovely in autumn when the vines turn gold and the markets fill with walnuts, truffles, and local cheese.

The weather was uncertain. It was overcast but warm. The clouds were heavy but then the sun shone. Which matched the mood of the boat crews who didn’t seem to know if they were coming or going! With two on board who had never been in a canoe in their lives and weather which could have gone either way, a boat trip on the Dordogne was always going to be a gamble! Even the decision as to who would go in each boat was a challenge!
The Boat Race it was not . Two boats. One with two people in it – lighter but with less rowing power. The other holding three. So, heavier but one with an injured shoulder. Who would you bet on?

Martin Walker’s series of books are better than any travel guide. Through the investigations of Bruno, Chief of Police Walkers tales of crime will immerse you into the culture, history, food and community that make up the rich tapestry of village life in the Dordogne. Based on the village of Le Bugue, Bruno, the town’s only police man, solves cases linked to international crime, historical murders and smuggling. (don’t worry they are not real!) His methods are not traditional; they include sharing a glass of Bergerac, preparing a truffle omelette or chatting to suspects at the local market. These are must reads for anyone who loves everything that is the Dordogne.
