« Enormously strange »are the words chosen by the artist Wim Delvoye to describe the incredible collection gathered by Jean Chatelus (1939–2021) in his Parisian apartments from the late 1960s onwards. From the bedroom to the garage, this book takes us into his modern-day cabinet of curiosities, as precise and demanding as it is disturbing and thought-provoking. The collection includes the work of numerous artists such as Cindy Sherman, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Mike Kelley, Yayoi Kusama, Christian Boltanski, and Gina Pane, alongside Komo masks and religious knick-knacks. The collection encompasses over 600 artworks and documents sculptures, installations, paintings, photographs, drawings, votive and vernacular objects all testifying to the collector’s obsession: the tormented body, tthe poetics of ruins, death, the organic and its decomposition, the looming threat of apocalypse, the forbidden, the religious and its blasphemy. Enriched with detailed entries on the pieces, critical essays, and personal accounts, this book documents the collection and pays tribute to its creator’s unwavering dedication.
This catalog was published on the occasion of the bequest of the Jean Chatelus collection to the Fondation Antoine de Galbert, followed by its donation to the musée national d’Art moderne – Centre Pompidou.

The “About” section of the Palace of Typographic Masonry website reads as follows: “The Palace of Typographic Masonry was established as a foundation on May 15, 2018. The foundation pursues the following objectives:
1. Provide a physical and/or virtual environment for the creation of graphic design and a platform for the publication and presentation of associated work-graphic or otherwise;
2. Build a reference framework for graphic design;
3. Familiarize a diverse audience with a varied and relevant graphic design landscape;
4. Draw attention to graphic design as a unique discipline and profession;
5. Promote the recognition of individuals who have proven important to graphie design as a profession and/or the development of the field.”
Over the course of four epistolary exchanges, Thierry Chancogne and Richard Niessen have a palatial discussion of the content, issues, and the principles of classification of this palace of “the splendor and variety of graphic languages,” a place dedicated to the promotion, dissemination, and support of an open and adventurous approach to our discipline of graphism, graphic design, and typography.

Dr. Marage’s 19th-century vowel simulator machine not only explored voice physiology but also contributed to the graphic representation of sound. Its mechanical reproduction of voice captured the imagination of designers and scientists, illustrating our complex relationship with technology through both its function and visual form. The machine’s legacy in print media, from diagrams to illustrations, framed an « order of language, » influencing design aesthetics and the politics of language in contemporary graphic practices.

Understanding the impact of digital computing on writing requires exploring how binary code transformed from telegraph signals to modern typography. This transition from physical to electrical signals redefined how we design and perceive text. Writing now exists in a dual realm where human-readable signs are complemented by machine-readable signals, shaping a new typographic language. This evolution influences graphic design, where the materiality of code, defined by the presence or absence of electrical current, challenges traditional design constraints, offering new possibilities for form and expression.

Norm is a graphic design office in Zurich. Founded in 1999 by Dimitri Bruni (1970) and Manuel Krebs (1970), Ludovic Varone (1977) joined the office in 2005. The canon of graphic design history will be compressed. 100 years from now there will be no Müller-Brockmann or Gerstner or Hofmann. Prehistoric pretenders. Not needed. There will be Norm. Norm is what all those others dreamed of. What they strived for but could not attain. They will be remembered only as the nameless builders of Norm. They laboured at the construction of its glorious Duomo but did not live to see it completed. We will not speak of them again. Forgotten.

Norm n’a connu que le design graphique numérique. C’est sa langue maternelle. L’ordinateur est son outil et Norm maîtrise l’ordinateur. Dans 100 ans on ne connaitra plus Müller-Brockmann, Gerstner ou Hofmann. De prétentieux préhistoriques. Mais on connaitra Norm. Norm est ce à quoi tous ces derniers rêvaient. Ce qu’ils on cherché à atteindre sans jamais y parvenir. Ils ne resteront que comme les initiateurs anonymes de Norm. Ils auront travaillé à l’édification de ce ciel glorieux sans vivre assez pour le voir achevé. Nous ne parlerons pas plus longtemps d’eux. Disparus.

🤩Tout juste sorti 🥰
Les livres sont aux prémices d’une majorité des œuvres d’Éléonore False. Elle y glane des images qu’elle prélève directement ou qu’elle reproduit. Puis une première spatialisation prend place dans les classeurs où les formes découpées et leurs rebuts sont glissés dans des pochettes transparentes. Leur emplacement n’est pas figé pas plus que leur sens de lecture ni leur chronologie.
Pour sa première monographie des morceaux choisis de ces classeurs ont été reproduits en modifiant graduellement l’échelle. Elle fige pour la première fois certains de ces assemblages intuitifs et de ces juxtapositions fortuites. Les compositions qui en résultent sont parfois d’une clarté immédiate comme ce caméléon qui repose sur diverses strates de matières organiques. Pour d’autres ils laissent entrevoir des sources iconographiques ou un vocabulaire formel très variés : l’efficacité visuelle d’une bouche rouge glossy en pleine page orientée à la verticale ou encore le pouvoir évocateur de contre-formes dans des pages vierges qui laissent apparaître la silhouette d’un visage par le jeu de la réserve.
Entre ces pages ici reproduites sont glissés cinq ensembles d’œuvres. Dans chacun d’eux plusieurs séries plusieurs typologies plusieurs moments se croisent et se côtoient pour révéler des relations d’une autre nature que celles qui sont induites par ses expositions. Cinq auteurs et autrices se sont prêtés au jeu d’écrire sur l’œuvre de l’artiste en s’appuyant uniquement sur l’un de ces ensembles et Kathy Alliou accompagne la parole d’Éléonore False dans un entretien qui retrace plus de dix années de pratique.
