For a generation of Canadians, West Edmonton Mall wasn’t just somewhere you went shopping. It felt like a whole world under one roof.

When the mall opened in 1981, it became the world’s largest shopping mall at the time. Fantasyland followed in 1983, adding another reason for families to make a full day of the trip.

For many people, memories of this place aren’t really about what they bought — they’re about walking around, seeing the attractions and feeling like there was always something else around the corner.

Who remembers their first trip to West Edmonton Mall? 🇨🇦

🇨🇦 They came in overwhelming force. The Canadians refused to give up the hill.

On the night of May 2–3, 1953, C Company of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment faced a major Chinese assault on Hill 187 during the Korean War.

For roughly eight brutal hours, Canadian soldiers fought from trenches and defensive positions as artillery, mortars and infantry attacks battered the ridge. Some positions were temporarily overrun, but the defenders continued fighting and held the hill.

By morning, the attack had been stopped — at a devastating cost.

Twenty-five Canadian soldiers were lost.

More than seven decades later, Hill 187 remains part of the story of Canadians who served, fought and died in Korea.

🇨🇦 **BOURLON WOOD — SEPTEMBER 27, 1918.**

More than a century ago, Canadian troops fought their way across the Canal du Nord and toward the heights of Bourlon Wood during the final months of the First World War.

The battlefield was scarred by artillery, shattered trenches and broken trees. Today, the Bourlon Wood Canadian Memorial stands peacefully on the ground Canadians fought to capture.

Among its most remarkable reminders of that battle are the historic trees along the memorial approach — some damaged by shellfire in 1918 and later nursed back to health.

The soldiers are gone. The battlefield is quiet.

But the ground — and even some of the trees — still carry the memory. 🇨🇦

🇨🇦 In 1941, Canadian troops were sent on one of the strangest Allied missions of the Second World War — deep into the High Arctic.

During **Operation Gauntlet**, Canadian forces landed on Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago alongside British and Norwegian personnel. Their mission wasn’t to capture territory in a major battle. It was to deny valuable coal, fuel and infrastructure to N**i Germany.

Mining facilities and coal stores were destroyed, while thousands of Norwegian and Soviet civilians were evacuated from the islands.

The operation was completed without the large-scale firefight many might expect from a wartime raid.

Far above the Arctic Circle, Canadian troops had carried the war to one of the most remote places on Earth.

A remarkable chapter of Canadian military history that deserves to be remembered. 🇨🇦

On February 10, 1942, HMCS Spikenard was escorting Convoy SC-67 across the North Atlantic when the Canadian corvette was torpedoed and sunk.

The ship disappeared beneath the freezing Atlantic, taking 57 lives with her.

For the sailors of the Royal Canadian Navy, convoy duty meant facing brutal weather, darkness, and the constant unseen threat of German U-boats while protecting the merchant ships that kept Britain supplied.

HMCS Spikenard and the Canadians who never returned remain part of the enormous sacrifice made during the Battle of the Atlantic. 🇨🇦⚓

🇨🇦 His aircraft was burning. His crew was wounded. But Flight Lieutenant David Ernest Hornell refused to abandon the attack.

On June 24, 1944, Hornell and his No. 162 Squadron crew encountered German submarine U-1225 in the North Atlantic.

Their Consolidated Canso came under intense anti-aircraft fire, damaging the aircraft and setting it ablaze. Despite the danger, Hornell continued the attack, and the U-boat was sunk.

The crippled Canso was eventually forced down into the freezing Atlantic.

With only one serviceable dinghy for the survivors, Hornell — already exhausted and suffering from exposure — gave up his place so a wounded crewmate could have a better chance of survival.

After spending roughly 21 hours in the cold Atlantic, the survivors were rescued. Hornell died shortly afterward.

For his courage and devotion to his crew, David Hornell was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

He was 34 years old.

🇨🇦🇳🇱 **AMSTERDAM — MAY 1945**

After five years of N**i occupation, the sight of Canadian troops arriving in Amsterdam became a moment of extraordinary relief.

The western Netherlands had just survived the devastating **Hunger Winter of 1944–45**, when severe food and fuel shortages brought immense suffering.

As liberation arrived, enormous crowds poured into the streets to welcome the Canadians. Civilians surrounded military vehicles, waved flags, offered flowers, and celebrated the end of years of occupation.

For many Dutch families, those Canadian uniforms represented something they had waited years to see again:

**Freedom.**

More than eight decades later, the bond forged between Canada and the Netherlands during liberation is still remembered. 🇨🇦❤️🇳🇱

Before the First World War, Tom Longboat — Cogwagee — was already one of Canada’s greatest distance runners, winning the Boston Marathon in 1907.

Then he traded the racecourse for the battlefield.

The Onondaga athlete from Six Nations of the Grand River served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. In France, Longboat worked as a dispatch runner, carrying vital military messages between Canadian positions when damaged communication lines made other methods unreliable.

The same endurance that had made him a champion became invaluable on the Western Front.

From marathon victories to wartime service, Tom Longboat’s story remains a remarkable chapter in both Indigenous and Canadian history. 🇨🇦

🇨🇦 **They were cold, exhausted, and under relentless fire — but they held the line.**

From November 22–25, 1951, soldiers of the Royal 22e Régiment — the legendary **Van Doos** — fought through a brutal battle around Hill 355 during the Korean War.

Enemy artillery and mortar fire hammered Canadian positions as repeated attacks threatened to overwhelm the defenders. The fighting cost the regiment **16 lives**, with many more wounded.

Yet through the darkness, freezing conditions and enormous pressure, the Canadians refused to abandon their ground.

Hill 355 became another chapter in the story of Canadians who served — and sacrificed — far from home.

🇨🇦 **16 Canadians never came home from those days of fighting. We remember them.**
