From the outside, you’d never guess.

Cut into a pera cocomerina and the flesh is suddenly pink, vivid and unexpected, almost like watermelon.

Take a bite and it gets more interesting. Sweet, juicy, softly grainy, with that unmistakable pear texture. And because it ripens quickly, there are only a few days when it is at its best.

It grows in the Apennines around Ville di Montecoronaro, where this curious little fruit has become part of the landscape and the local table.

Perhaps that is why it feels like more than a pear.

For a few fleeting bites, you get the sweetness of the fruit, the surprise of the colour, and a little taste of the mountain it came from. 🌻

Your eyes can see millions of colours. So why do four keep stealing the show?

Red. Yellow. Green. Blue.

Look around and almost every colour you see can be understood in relation to them. And new research suggests that may be because our vision has become remarkably well suited to the colours that occur most often in nature.

In other words, the way we see colour may have been shaped by the world we spend our lives looking at.

Suddenly, a blue sky and a green leaf feel a little less ordinary.

Did your dog just blink back?

It might not be your imagination.

New research has found that dogs blink more when they see their own human blinking, a response researchers didn't observe in quite the same way with unfamiliar people.

It doesn't mean you've developed a secret blinking language with your dog. Scientists don't yet know exactly what the response means.

But it does suggest something rather lovely: dogs may be sensitive to even the tiniest signals from the humans they know.

Turns out they really are watching us. Quite closely. 🐾

Well, hello there.

This rather curious little face belongs to an orange-tailed marsh dart damselfly, photographed peering through a leaf in a freshwater wetland in Odisha, India.

The photograph, by student Sritam Kumar Sethy, has just been named the overall winner of the 2026 BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition.

There’s a more serious story behind those rather magnificent eyes. Damselflies are sensitive to changes in their environment, so their presence can be a useful sign of a healthy wetland.

Sometimes nature looks back. 👀

Peppermint. Fresh, fragrant… and rather more interesting than we thought.

Best known around here for keeping mojitos company, peppermint has caught the attention of researchers for another reason.

A small new study found that adults with mildly elevated blood pressure who took a tiny amount of peppermint oil twice a day for 20 days saw their systolic blood pressure fall by an average of 8.5 mmHg.

Just 40 people took part, so there’s much more to learn. But we rather like it when something familiar gives science a reason to look twice. 🌱

HOPE!! seems a rather fitting title this week. ⭐

Angélique Kidjo has just made history as the first African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And if that has you wondering what she's been creating lately, there's a rather joyful answer.

Her latest album, HOPE!!, brings together an extraordinary musical gathering. Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers, Ayra Starr, Davido, Quavo, PJ Morton and the Soweto Gospel Choir are just some of the names joining her across its 16 tracks.

But beneath all that star power is something much more personal. Kidjo dedicated the album to her late mother, whose optimism and strength helped shape her own belief in the importance of hope.

Music with rhythm, colour, generations and continents meeting in the same place. And, appropriately enough, plenty of joy.

A Hollywood star may be the latest reason to celebrate Angélique Kidjo. HOPE!! is a very good reason to listen.

It's impossible to scroll past a flamingo when one has become part of the SunKiss family.

Martini, our adopted flamingo from the Camargue, may be the reason we now notice these remarkable birds wherever they appear. So when we discovered this beautiful photograph among the nominees for the 2026 Siena International Photo Awards, it immediately earned a place in today's Good News by SunKiss.

Nature has an effortless way of creating works of art. This image is a lovely reminder to keep looking up, looking closer, and staying curious.
