AI AND MUSIC (ONE YEAR LATER) Part 1: You help is needed!
A year ago (October 29) I wrote a long post about AI and music with a lot of predictions. I have been thinking about writing a follow up post these weeks and the other day came a trigger that made me think now is the best time for it. So I’m writing on a follow up on the topic, which I plan to post tomorrow or the day after. Meanwhile...
The trigger was that a fan made me aware of a YouTube channel that post AI-produced metal songs (link in the comments), which illegally use Therion and other established artist names to market their AI music, by tricking the listener into thinking it's a new Therion recording.
It is totally legal to produce AI-music that draws inspiration from real artists and earn money from it. But that doesn't mean they have the right to use the trademark and logos of those artists to sell it. You can see that those videos where they claim to "tribute", the title is written in an intentionally misleading way, so that it appears that it is Therion that is making a tribute to someone. This is further enhanced by using a Therion logo in the picture. The idea with using the word ”tribute” is of course additionally intended so that they can pretend to be ”just fans who just wanted to pay tribute to their hereos” when inevitably sooner or later they will be confronted with this. But make no mistake, this is a deliberate part of the scam. Those ”tributes” doesn’t even remotely sound like the bands they claim to tribute (not that it would be a tribute if someone ask a computer program to try to copy you).
They of course have no contact data. I’ve reported the video to YouTube, but that never make any difference with a single complaint. It has to be many people reporting to have any effect. And that is where YOU can make a difference. Go there and report every single song that use a famous band name (Therion, Within Temptation, Iron Maiden, Hammerfall, Saxon, Haggard, Exodus, Cradle Of Flith and many more) and claim it’s a scam. Encourage friends to do the same. And if people want to notify those other scammed bands (so they can take action too) would also be helpful. If enough people report the songs as fraud, they will be taken down and hopefully the entire channel shut down.
If the people behind the channel wants to earn money from AI generated music, then they should create a new channel where they come clean about the music being AI generated - and not try to trick people into listening to their stuff by using famous band names with no relation to their computer generated music.
