Don’t dream it. Be it.
While the world has been mourning the loss of two absolute icons this weekend, my feed has understandably been flooded with tributes, memories and quotes from Dolly Parton and Tim Curry.
But there’s one from Tim Curry’s legendary, transcendent, transformative (I could go on) performance as Dr Frank-N-Furter that’s always stuck with me:
“Don’t dream it. Be it.”
A quote I’ve genuinely considered having tattooed on my body. Perhaps my forehead. Jury’s still out.
I first saw Rocky Horror as a teenager and those four words have rattled around my brain ever since.
Because there’s something so powerful about them.
Don’t just dream about being the person you want to be. Give yourself permission to be them.
Wear the thing. Start the business. Dye your hair. Take up space. Say the thing. Apply for the opportunity. Be outrageous. Be ambitious. Be weird. Be completely and unapologetically yourself.
Stop saving that version of you for “one day”.
I’ve built so much of my life around following the things that light me up, even when they’ve felt scary, ridiculous, when folks poked fun (especially when they’ve poked fun) when it’s all felt “a bit cringe.” (ADORE!)
Don’t dream it. Be it.
Four little words that have had a surprising amount of sway on my life. 💖
