AI QURAN TRANSLATIONS
A video about 'Lut In the Quran' by AI Moses PhD came to my attention.
Is "AI Moses PhD" a pseudonym? It certainly appears to be. If so, why is he not using his real name?
The video is almost two hours long, with a second part still to come. For the limited scope of what is actually being discussed, it is far longer than necessary. Much of it could have been presented far more concisely.
The "Quran alone" label is also becoming rather tiresome. It increasingly gives the impression that the presenter believes he has exclusive access to the true meaning of the Quran, while everyone else has somehow misunderstood it for centuries.
No clear methodology is provided, nor are there objective criteria by which the viewer can verify his claims. As a result, it is difficult to assess the value or reliability of his conclusions. Simply asserting that traditional interpretations are wrong is not a methodology.
From what I can gather, the central question he is building towards is whether the verses concerning Lot and homosexuality are later external impositions on the Quran. However, this proposition immediately runs into difficulty with Quran 7:81, where Lot explicitly rebukes men for approaching men with desire instead of women.
The presenter's repeated attempts to redefine established Quranic vocabulary are also unconvincing. His grasp of Classical Arabic appears weak, and many of his lexical arguments seem arbitrary rather than linguistically grounded.
For example, he makes much of the fact that Lot is not explicitly called a 'Nabi'. But this is hardly significant. Nabi is not an exclusive designation for God's messengers; the root simply relates to conveying information or announcing news, and the term is used in the Quran with a broader semantic range. His argument therefore proves very little.
Without seeing his complete translation of the Quran, it is impossible to judge whether these reinterpretations produce a coherent reading of the text as a whole. At present, it appears to be another example of an AI-generated translation built around isolated lexical reinterpretations.
You may already know my views on piecemeal approaches, which I have frequently expressed here and other platforms. A translation or interpretation should demonstrate consistency across the entire Quran, not merely offer new readings of selected passages.
