Scots are being warned to look out for the signs of norovirus, often known as the winter vomiting bug, as colder weather sets in and seasonal illnesses spread more easily.

Common symptoms include
• Vomiting
• Nausea
• Diarrhoea
• Headaches
• Body aches
• Stomach pain
• Raised temperature

NHS advice is clear. Anyone affected should stay off work or school until at least 48 hours after symptoms have stopped.

To help prevent the spread
• Avoid visiting hospitals while unwell
• Wash hands regularly with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before preparing food
• Be aware that alcohol-based hand sanitisers do not kill norovirus

The virus spreads very easily in shared spaces such as schools, care homes, and hospitals, so extra care is essential.
