A “couthy” community centre in Ruthrieston is celebrating 150 years of bringing people together under one roof ❤️

Originally a Victorian school, Ruthrieston Community Centre has survived attempted closures, and even demolition, to remain at the heart of its Aberdeen neighbourhood.

Now its past, present and future is being celebrated by the volunteers who keep the vital facility going with an open day on Saturday 👇🏻

For 150 years Ruthrieston Community Centre has been at the heart of its community. First as a school, then as a college annexe and later as a beloved hub bringing people of all ages together at playgroups, youth groups and craft clubs.

Once the biggest town in historic Banffshire, Buckie has been buoyed by fishing and boat building for generation upon generation 🐟

Unsurprisingly, our collection of archive photos centres on its rich maritime heritage, but also a royal visit in 1982.

These days the Shakkin’ Briggie at Cults is a rusting monument to the power of nature and the inaction of man.

The bridge over the River Dee is a rare surviving example of an early suspension bridge in Scotland 🌁

Built to connect a popular minister with his dedicated parishioners nearly 200 years ago, these days little more than divine intervention can be holding it together.

The Shakkin' Briggie at Cults was once a symbol of great philanthropy by a minister to unite a congregation divided by the powerful River Dee. Even in its decayed state it's noted as one of the earliest surviving suspension bridges in Scotland.

Aberdeen’s Douglas Strachan was the most eminent stained glass artist of his time and has been described as the greatest Scottish artist of the 20th Century ⛪️

He was a luminary of the Arts and Crafts movement and made stained glass windows for the Palace of Peace at The Hague.

So why has his name and genius slipped into obscurity in the 75 years since his death?

Stoneywood Mill was the last bastion of papermaking in Aberdeen – and the north – when it sadly closed in 2022 🏭

Of all the paper mills in Aberdeen, it had the longest history of production without a break, employing generations of families in a job for life.

We recall its illustrious and fascinating history: www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/past-times/6780939/stoneywood-paper-mill-history/
