This place has gone from the top… all the way to the bottom.

Of Union Street.

Maggie’s Grill started life up on Holburn Street, and I used to get takeaway from the old place ALL the time.

Mainly because I had a slight obsession with their chilli.

Fast forward a few years and Maggie’s is now in a much bigger home at Marischal Square on Broad Street. I’d heard plenty of good things since the move but somehow hadn’t properly been in for ages… so it was time to fix that.

Chicken tenders and ranch, nachos, burgers, chips and obviously I was reunited with the chilli via the Wolf Burger.

I also love that their burgers come from local Aberdeen butcher The Tilly Butcher. Local businesses supporting other local businesses will always get a thumbs up from me.

The kids were VERY happy too, with one declaring his burger “the best burger I’ve ever eaten.”

His words. Not mine.

But can we please have a moment for the pineapple mojito?!

That thing was dangerously easy to drink. I’d genuinely go back for another one of those alone.

So yes, Maggie’s has gone from the top to the bottom…

Thankfully, I’m still only talking about Union Street.

It’s been about 18 years since I last stood on this poolside.

I actually used to work at Bon Accord Baths, so walking back in here after all this time was a very strange feeling.

The baths closed in 2008, and there are so many bits of this place that still feel incredibly familiar.

Bon Accord Baths opened in 1940 and for decades was part of everyday life in Aberdeen. People learned to swim here, competed here, worked here, sat in those stands and I know a LOT of you have your own memories attached to this building.

Since the doors closed, Bon Accord Heritage has been working to protect it and ultimately bring it back into use.

And right now, the empty pool looks very different.

DIVERS, by artist Tod Hanson, fills the bottom of the pool with this huge, colourful installation, using the old swimming lanes as part of the artwork.

Seeing it from a poolside I remember so well was pretty special.

But beyond the artwork, so much of the old baths is still there the spectator seating, that enormous vaulted roof, the woodwork and all those little details that instantly took me back.

Aberdeen has lost plenty of buildings over the years.

I really hope this isn’t one of them.

Bon Accord Baths has already given this city a lot and it feels like its story isn’t finished yet.

This place did NOT amuse me…

Because why has nobody told me they’re giving away FREE DESSERT?!

Throughout September, Amuse on Queen’s Terrace is running Sweet September order two courses from their seasonal Market Lunch menu and they’ll treat you to dessert.

So obviously I went to investigate. For research purposes.

Between the two of us we pretty much worked our way through the menu, king prawns, freshly baked sourdough, minestrone, nori-cured tuna, lamb rump and a whole sole that was very much a WHOLE sole.

Special mention to the potatoes, which appeared to be approximately 50% potato and 50% butter. No complaints.

Then came the reason we were really there…

Dessert. On them.

Affogato for me because coffee + dessert is always going to win, and the cheese selection for my friend.

What I really like about Amuse is that although the food and setting have that finer-dining feel, it doesn’t feel stuffy. It was a really relaxed lunch, the staff were genuinely lovely and we were made to feel very welcome.

The seasonal Market Lunch is £25 for two courses, and during September your dessert is included with the two-course lunch.

Amuse… I’m still slightly offended nobody told me sooner.

But free dessert? Fine. You’re forgiven.

Settle in. Grab a coffee. This one’s three minutes long and apparently I woke up on a mission this morning.

I don’t usually spend much time responding to comments like this, but every now and then one gets right under my skin.

Disagree with me? Fine.
Tell me you had a different experience somewhere? Also fine.

But don’t underestimate the amount of work that goes into creating content, and don’t make assumptions about someone’s honesty or how they run their business just because you see the finished 60 seconds on your screen.

So yes… this one got my back up a bit.

You lot told me about these… so obviously I had to investigate.

After I posted those fruit-shaped desserts last week, SO many of you told me there was an ice cream version hiding in Many Mart on Merkland Road East.

So naturally… I went looking.

I picked up mango, lemon and apple and somehow managed to nearly launch one across the room before I’d even started.

🥭 Mango — very Solero-ish.
🍋 Lemon — fresh, summery, weirdly made me think of being on holiday, but not too sharp.
🍏 Apple — THE WINNER.

The apple was just so ridiculously… appley. I don’t know how else to describe it. That was easily the one I’d go back for.

You’ll find them at Many Mart Asian Supermarket on Merkland Road East in Aberdeen, and they’ve also got the food truck outside, which is well worth a visit while you’re there.

And before the usual comments arrive asking how I’m not the size of a house with the amount of food I film…

I DON’T EAT IT ALL!

Half goes back in the freezer, the kids get involved, things get shared and shockingly…I do occasionally enter a gym.

So now I need to know: mango, lemon or apple , which one are you picking?

When was the last time you dipped your feet in the sea?

It genuinely baffles me that I have friends in America who have never done this.

Never just taken their shoes off, walked down to the water and stood there for a few minutes.

And it made me realise how much we probably take this for granted in Aberdeen.

We have the North Sea right on our doorstep.

No big plan. No ticket. No special occasion.

You can just head down to Aberdeen Beach, freeze your toes off for five minutes and give yourself a wee bit of space from everything else going on.

We spend so much time rushing about, thinking about the next thing, sorting the next thing, worrying about the next thing…

Sometimes it’s nice to just stop.

Look around.

Appreciate what’s already here.

Not everything has to be productive. Sometimes doing something small for yourself is enough to make your head feel a little quieter.

And I think we’re very lucky to live somewhere where moments like this are so easy to find.

So maybe this is your reminder to go and enjoy it.

Even if the North Sea is absolutely Baltic.

This story starts before the doors even opened…

Freemasons’ Hall on Crown Street is one of those Aberdeen buildings you can walk past without really knowing what’s behind the front door.

The foundation stone was laid in 1908, the building opened in 1910, and inside it is far grander than you’d ever guess from the street.

There are ceremonial halls, ornate ceilings, Austrian oak panelling, Masonic symbols throughout the building, and an enormous marble zodiac set into the entrance floor.

Above the main entrance are the words “Audi, Vide, Tace” hear, see and be silent.

And yes… I somehow ended up being taken down into the vault too, which was absolutely not on my bingo card for the day

This is exactly why I love getting inside buildings like this. Aberdeen has so much history sitting behind doors we pass every day.

I guess this is farewell… for now.

Aberdeen Restaurant Week has officially come to an end, so it’s probably time I stopped talking about it every five minutes

But before I do, I just wanted to say a huge thank you to Aberdeen Inspired for asking me to be an ambassador this time round.

It’s been such a good excuse to shout about Aberdeen restaurants, try somewhere new, revisit places I already love, and hopefully encourage a few of you to get out and support the city’s food scene too.

For me, Aberdeen Restaurant Week has never just been about the deals.

It’s about getting people through the doors, filling tables, supporting local businesses and reminding ourselves just how much good food we actually have in Aberdeen.

And judging by how busy so many places have been… Aberdeen really showed up.

Thank you to every restaurant that welcomed me in, everyone who watched, shared, commented, voted in my polls and came along for the ride.

And thank you again to Aberdeen Inspired for trusting me with it.

I hope I ambassador-ed well.

Aberdeen, thank you. ❤️

I spent today running around half the city, clocking up thousands of steps, sticking my nose into buildings I’d normally only ever walk past… and it ended up being one of the loveliest days I’ve had doing this.

So many people stopped me to say hello, tell me they watch the videos, or say they’ve started looking at Aberdeen a little differently because of them.

That they’re noticing the history more. Looking up at buildings. Going into places they’d never normally visit. Seeing the city a bit more like they would if they were somewhere on holiday.

And that means so much to me.

Today just felt like Aberdeen really showed up.

The buildings were busy, people were curious, everyone was chatting, and there was such a nice buzz around the city.

So if you came out for Doors Open Days, explored somewhere new, said hello, watched, shared, or just gave Aberdeen a wee bit more of a chance today…thank you.

This is exactly why I love doing Tok of the Deen.

I am now officially retiring to the sofa because my feet are finished.
