One of my favourite pictures! Dads up in the Welsh Valleys carrying their babies 'Welsh fashion' - hands up who remembers these? I most certainly do & I'm going to have to invent a baban so I can make a video for you guys on how to wrap the baby in a shawl! Do share any memories in the comments. I'd love to hear them...

For those of you who are not familiar here's a little bit of history. A Welsh nursing shawl, also known as a siôl magu or siôl nyrsio, is a large, rectangular shawl traditionally used in Wales to carry babies while leaving the mother's hands free. It's a practical garment that allows a mother to keep her baby close and warm while continuing with her daily tasks. They are typically made from wool and usually had long fringes on all sides. Earlier shawls were natural & plain but latterly woven with checks/plaids.

The use of nursing shawls was common in Wales, particularly in the valleys where steep terrain made prams impractical. The practice continued until the mid-20th century.

The big question for Welsh language speakers - is it 'siôl magu' or 'siôl fagu'? It seems to be an ongoing debate ❤️

So many lovely comments about my thoroughly enjoyable trip down to visit London Cloth at Elvet Woollen Mill in Cynwyl Elfed, Carmarthenshire in West Wales so here are some more photos to accompany my previous video. I absolutely loved seeing this old dilapidated mill being brought back to life & hearing the super talented Weaver Dan's enthusiastic (if a little bonkers) plans for the future. My absolute favourite part was when he opened an old leather suitcase & it was full of samples of all Elvet's back stock - all the Welsh blanket patterns & colourways they'd made over the years! That literally blew me away!

If you're interested in our Welsh heritage & fancy doing your bit for the Welsh Woollen industry then you can book in for one of their small group tours.

Only a handful of mills left out of some 300 in Wales back in the day. We must preserve this guys before it's all lost forever💔

***SOLD ***Oh Myfanwy is looking mighty fine today isn't she?!! She's such a little minx she's always trying on the new stock & stealing the show. Today she's wearing a rare find - a full length vintage 1960s Welsh wool tapestry cape in stunning purple & black with a pop of pink. This traditional Caernarfonshire portcullis design is not that often found on clothing & was usually reserved for the blankets. Gorgeous coordinating pink buttons plus two side slits for hands/arms. Lovely original Welsh dragon 'made in Wales' label inside. Lovely condition. Stand out from the crowd. On the stall today or just put on my website...

I told you I picked up something special when I was down in West Wales last week & here it is. Coming with me to Abergavenny Market tomorrow...

This beautiful new Welsh tapestry blanket in red, white & black oozes Welsh tradition as it's the colours of the Welsh Lady's costume. This has been made in one of the few mills still remaining in Wales - Elvet Woollen Mill in Cynwyl Elfed, Carmarthenshire, West Wales on a traditional vintage Dobcross loom. The mill has recently been rescued & is slowly & painstakingly being brought back to life. One of a limited number woven it is a huge size ie. 90 inches x 86 inches & beautiful soft wool. Lovely fulled fringe.

The rare pattern is called 'Pennsylvania' & is an old signature design of this mill. It was originally commissioned by a North American trader & was named after the US state of Pennsylvania which has strong Welsh textile connections.

As a dwindling heritage craft in Wales it is vital we support these small mills that remain to ensure that they survive for future generations. Wool is a natural, renewable & sustainable material.

Naturals for today's display! Stunning Welsh blankets in Natural undyed Kingswood Ryeland wool woven by Curlew Weavers of Ceredigion, West Wales. Only a few items left.

The wool is obtained from sheep raised in Carmarthenshire by Lesley Wickham. Long before she had the sheep, Lesley was a knitwear designer using a knitting machine. She now specialises in using her own wool and various products are available from the sheep as well as the knitwear.

Their sheep have been carefully bred for over 30 years to provide high-quality wool in a variety of natural colours. With no need for dyeing, the wool is very eco-friendly. It only travels to West Wales to be spun, so has very low “fibre miles” – even more eco-friendly.

Beautiful small lap blankets £45 (2 available) & one throw/blanket £140 (1 available). On the stall today. Will post just DM & I can pop on my website ❤️

Time now for a photo shoot while I wait for my new business cards to turn up from moo.com New arrival - vintage Welsh tapestry blanket!
