Who remembers Corona pop? The soft drinks were initially manufactured in Porth, Rhondda by grocers William Thomas and William Evans, who were determined to offer thirsty miners an alternative to alcohol. Failing to get pubs to stock their soft drinks, they sold door-to-door and introduced flavours that would appeal to children. (1938)

Dewch i gwrdd ag Amos Brown (1864 – 1956)! Dechreuodd Amos ei fywyd yn UDA fel plentyn wedi'i gaethiwo, a daeth i ben fel perchennog mochyndy mawr yn Ynysboeth, Rhondda. Yn Appalachicola cafodd ei orfodi o gwch afon i long môr, gan neidio o'r llong hwnnw yng Nghaerdydd. Yn ystod ei fywyd rhyfeddol, daeth Amos yn ffigwr adnabyddus, gan weithio mewn nifer o lofeydd, rhagori mewn bocsio, beicio a rhedeg, a theithio o gwmpas fel y rhithiwr ‘Massetta Sousenior’! Mae erthygl amdano yn yr Aberdare Leader yn 1949 yn cyfeirio ato fel un “sy’n cael ei garu gan holl blant yr ardal ac yn cael ei ystyried gan drigolion o oedran mwy aeddfed yn ‘hen ŵr bonheddig caredig, diwyd ac â chalon aur’”.
Rydyn ni'n rhannu'r ffilm hon er mwyn nodi Mis Hanes Pobl Ddu, er hynny, byddai'n esgeulus inni beidio â chydnabod bod yna dan-gynrychiolaeth yn sicr o hanes Du yn yr archif, a’n gobaith yw mynd i’r afael â’r anghydbwysedd hwn yn y dyfodol wrth i ni barhau i adeiladu ein casgliadau.

Meet Amos Brown (1864 – 1956)! Amos started life in the USA as an enslaved child, and ended it as the owner of a large piggery at Ynysboeth, Rhondda. In Appalachicola he was press-ganged from a river boat onto a sea-going vessel, and jumped ship in Cardiff. During his remarkable life, Amos became a well known figure, working in a number of collieries, excelling in boxing, cycling and running, and even travelled around as the illusionist ‘Massetta Sousenior’! An article about him in the Aberdare Leader in 1949 refers to him as “loved by all the local children and is regarded by residents of more mature age as ‘a kindly old gentleman, industrious and with a heart of gold’”.
We're sharing this film in honour of Black History Month, however, it would be remiss of us not to acknowledge that there's certainly an under-representation of Black histories in the archive, and we hope to readdress this imbalance in future as we continue to build our collections.
