Abingdon Film Unit

Abingdon Film Unit An internationally known student film company based at Abingdon School. The group for members: http://www.facebook.com/groups/264668200222125/

The Abingdon Film Unit (AFU) and its sister organisation, the Abingdon Film Academy (AFA) exist to enable young people between the ages of 13 and 18 to make their own short films under the guidance of a team of industry professionals. Based at Abingdon School near Oxford, UK, the AFU was formed in 2003 by Jeremy Taylor and renowned British documentary maker Michael Grigsby, who helped to assemble

a formidable team of visiting tutors that include Jonas Mortensen (cinematography), Mikkel Eriksen (sound design), Arvid Eriksson (editing), artists and filmmakers Nikolaj Larsen, Duncan Pickstock and Matt Copson, BAFTA-winning writer/director Colin O'Toole, creative producer Rebekah Tolley and award-winning animators Joanna Harrison and Geoff Dunbar. Together, the AFU have developed a way of working with students that encourages them to adopt the highest standards, and develop their ideas through a process of careful research and reflection that seeks to clarify at every stage the aims and intentions of their films. Grigsby died in 2013, having helped to establish the Unit's reputation as one of the finest film training programmes for young people. Since then, the work of the Unit has continued to expand and develop. In 2018, the Unit added a new wing to its programme - the Abingdon Film Academy - to enable young people from a wider range of backgrounds to learn filmmaking. To date, Academy members have included students from Larkmead, Fitzharrys and John Mason Schools in Abingdon, as well as students from schools in London and Cheltenham.

Dear Friends, AFU / ASPS alumni and AFU tutors past and present,

Greetings from Abingdon. I hope you are well and thriving. Please see the attached e-flyer for the AFU's next annual screening, which takes place in the Amey Theatre at 7pm on Wednesday November 12th (three weeks today). As always, tickets and refreshments are free, and should you be able to come, it would be wonderful to see you there.

This will be the last screening over which the London-based film unit tutors and I preside. I retire from Abingdon at the end of December, and from next September, the school moves to a new timetable and the AFU's traditional Wednesday afternoon slot will go, which means it will no longer be practical for the AFU tutors to come to the school. We very much hope Abingdon's tradition of student filmmaking - one that stretches back at least as far as 1953 and the first film made by the young Michael Grigsby - can continue beyond Christmas, and we await further announcements on that.

The AFU in its current form has had a wonderful run. This will be the Unit's 22nd annual screening. The 11 new films on show next month will take to somewhere in the region of 250 the total number of AFU student films that have been produced since 2003. Many of these have won awards and been seen at festivals around the world. AFU students have been able to work with filmmakers of the calibre of Michael Grigsby, Jonas Mortensen, Mikkel Eriksen, Nikolaj Larsen, Arvid Eriksson, Larry Sider, Joanna Harrison, Geoff Dunbar, Rebekah Tolley, Duncan Pickstock, Colin O'Toole, Matt Copson, Mads Junker, Bronwen Parker-Rhodes and Michael Bicarregui. Students have made films in Burma, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy, Kenya and Uganda as well as throughout Oxfordshire and the rest of the UK. Unsurprisingly, many AFU filmmakers are now making their mark in film, television and related disciplines. For me, the AFU has been a wonderful thing to be involved with.

So do join us for our final show, and please bring along anyone you know. You can of course just turn up, though it helps to have a rough idea of numbers for catering purposes. The link to book free tickets is here:

I am sure to have forgotten some names for the circulation list, so if you are still in touch with other AFU filmmakers, or indeed anyone who might like to attend the screening, please forward this invitation to them. And whether you can make it on November 12th or not, thank you so much for being part of the AFU experience.

With all good wishes,

Jeremy
