What do Thorle Pippin apples, bison and pineapples have in common?
You’ll find that they all feature in the history of the gardens at Abbotsford. Did you know that…
· Some of the old apple trees in the gardens such as the Thorle Pippin, date back to the early 1900s.
· The stone bison grazing on the arch between the Morris Garden and the Walled Garden was a gift from American writer Washington Irving when he visited Scott in 1817.
· Scott attempted to grow pineapples in his vinery, unfortunately without great success!
From exotic fruit to unusual statues, the ‘outdoor rooms’ at Abbotsford are full of surprising stories!
