Now’s the Time to Transplant Your Snowdrops! 🌿❄️

If you love snowdrops (Galanthus) and want to see them thrive year after year, now is the perfect time to transplant them in the green! This means moving them while they still have leaves, right after flowering—giving them the best chance to establish strong roots before summer.

Why transplant in the green?
✅ Better success rate – Unlike dry bulbs, actively growing snowdrops adapt more easily to their new spot.
✅ Faster establishment – They settle in quickly and will bloom beautifully next spring.
✅ Easier to handle – You can see exactly where they are and plant them in the right place.

To transplant: Simply lift a clump with a spade, keeping roots intact, and replant them at the same depth in their new home. Water well, and let nature do the rest!

Happy gardening! 🌱💚

Spring is here! While we can all look forward to longer days, warmer weather, and blossoming flowers, let’s not forget—March can still be a bit of a trickster. One moment, we’re basking in the sunshine, and the next, we’re hit with a surprise frost or an uninvited cold wind.

So, as I dive into preparing gardens for the new season, I’m keeping a healthy dose of caution—because let’s be honest, March loves to throw a curveball. That said, my to-do list this month is action-packed (and slightly chaotic). If you’re getting ready for spring, here’s what I’ll be up to and what you might want to tackle in your own garden!

By now, your redcurrant and blackcurrant bushes should be pruned to ensure strong growth and a good harvest this summer. Redcurrants fruit on old wood, so remove some of the oldest branches to encourage new shoots. Blackcurrants, on the other hand, fruit on new wood, so cut back about a third of the oldest stems to stimulate fresh growth. If you haven’t pruned yet, do it soon before the growing season kicks in!

There could be tens of thousands of these strangled-on-stake trees across the UK. In private gardens and along the side of roads, in car parks and housing estates, in schools and open green space – wherever trees have been planted, this issue can often be found.

Through a lack of good aftercare or a lack of understanding, these trees will struggle to establish in the landscape, with many dying as a result.

How to spot a strangling tree-tie ⬇️
📆 Are you aware that the tree was planted more than three years ago?
✋ Is the tree-tie overly tight and very difficult to move by hand?
🔎 Can you see a difference in the texture of the bark behind the tree-tie?
🌳 Is the trunk bulging above or below?
🪢 Is the tree-tie frayed or are the posts rotten?

What to do⬇️
📲 Make contact with the owner of the tree – this may be a homeowner, a local council, a highways authority or a management company.
🌱 Advise them of the issue and suggest to them that they investigate with a view to removing or adjusting the tree-tie.
🤝 When appropriate, the owner of the tree may appreciate an offer of help.

Winter is nearly behind us, and your garden is waking up! Now it is the time to:

1. Tidy up – Clear fallen leaves, cut back perennials, and declutter the garden.
2. Prune – Prune deciduous shrubs and trees, late-flowering clematis, wisteria and roses.
3. Prepare borders and containers – Refresh planters, divide and transplant herbaceous plants.
4. Feed the soil – Add compost and mulch, seaweed extract & other organic fertilizers.
5. Fruits & vegetables – Prune autumn raspberries, plant bare rooted soft fruits and trees, start forcing rhubarb, prepare vegetable beds for the upcoming season.
6. You can still plant bare-rooted shrubs and trees.

Even in the coldest days of winter, nature gives us a glimpse of the warmth to come! Winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) is one of the first flowers to bloom, often pushing through the snow with its bright yellow petals. These cheerful little blossoms bring a burst of sunshine to the winter landscape and are a favourite among pollinators waking up early in the season.

Plant winter aconite in the fall, and by late winter, you’ll have a golden carpet welcoming spring! Do you have these beauties blooming in your garden? Share your photos! 📸✨
