These foods are good for general kidney health and kidney disease in general. People argue that macadamia nuts aren't healthy, but are a healthier alternative to most other nuts available. They have less phosphorus and less potassium and are low in oxalates too.

How to maintain oral hygiene

🪥Brush twice daily and floss daily: Use a fluoride toothpaste to help strengthen teeth.

💦Stay hydrated: If your fluid intake isn't restricted, drinking plenty of water can help with dry mouth.

Clean dentures regularly: If you wear dentures, clean them every day to prevent infections and gum disease.

🦷Schedule regular dental checkups: See your dentist for routine cleanings and exams.

🗣️Inform your dentist: Always let your dentist know you have CKD, are on dialysis, or have had a kidney transplant. They may need to adjust their treatment plan, prescribe antibiotics, or schedule treatment on a specific day after dialysis.

1. Fatigue

When the kidneys aren’t working properly, toxins build up in the blood and the body produces less erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone needed to make red blood cells. This leads to anaemia and general tiredness.

2. Swelling in Ankles, Feet, or Hands (Oedema)

Damaged kidneys struggle to remove extra fluid and salt, causing water to accumulate in tissues.

3. Shortness of Breath

Extra fluid can build up in the lungs, or anaemia may reduce oxygen delivery to tissues—both make breathing harder.

4. High Blood Pressure

Failing kidneys can’t regulate salt and fluid balance properly, raising blood volume. Kidney hormone systems (like renin-angiotensin) may also become overactive.

5. Foamy or Bubbly Urine

Excess protein leaking into urine (proteinuria) creates persistent foaming. This is often an early warning sign.

6. Increased or Decreased Urination

Early kidney damage may cause increased urine frequency; later stages may reduce urine output as kidney function declines.

7. Dark, Tea-Coloured, or Bloody Urine

Blood in the urine (haematuria) can come from inflamed kidney filters or damaged urinary tract tissue.

8. Persistent Itching

Wastes such as urea and phosphorus build up in the bloodstream, irritating nerves in the skin.

9. Nausea or Vomiting

Toxin accumulation affects the digestive system, sometimes causing a metallic taste or reduced appetite as well.

10. Loss of Appetite
High levels of waste in the blood can cause nausea, altered taste, and general digestive upset.

🍋Lemon Potential benefits

Kidney stone prevention: The citrate in lemon juice can help prevent the formation of kidney stones, particularly the common calcium oxalate type, by binding with calcium in urine.

Reduces salt intake: Lemon juice can be used as a salt substitute to add flavor to food, which is helpful for people with CKD who need to limit sodium.

Low potassium: Lemons are low in potassium, making them a safer citrus option for most people with CKD who need to monitor their potassium intake.

Promotes hydration: Staying well-hydrated is crucial for kidney health, and adding lemon to water can encourage you to drink more fluids.

🍇Benefits of grapes for kidney health

Antioxidant properties: Grapes contain flavonoids and other polyphenols that protect against oxidative stress, a key factor in the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Anti-inflammatory effects: The antioxidants in grapes can help reduce inflammation, which is common in CKD patients and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular protection: Compounds in grapes
can help relax blood vessels, which is beneficial for those with CKD, as they have a higher risk of heart problems.

Potential for slowing disease progression: Studies in animal models show that diets supplemented with whole grapes or grape powder can help slow the progression of kidney disease.

🫚Benefits of ginger

Low in potassium: Ginger is naturally low in potassium, which is beneficial for those with CKD who need to limit their potassium intake.

Potential anti-inflammatory effects: Studies, particularly in diabetic kidney disease, suggest ginger may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the kidneys.

Flavoring: It can be used to add flavor to meals, helping to reduce salt intake.

If you are restricted on fluids, please consult your team.
