Why do some wedding dancefloors stay empty—even when the music’s great?

It’s often nothing to do with the playlist. It’s guest flow.

If the bar’s in another room, the photo booth is hidden, or older guests can’t find their way back… energy dissipates.

That’s why I treat layout the same way I treat music: plan it for connection. Not control. Thoughtful flow keeps people close—and the celebration alive.

If you’re designing a timeline or floor plan, make space work for you, not against you.

This week’s Sunday Soul is Teddy Pendergrass – The Whole Town’s Laughing at Me.
Released in 1977, this is soul at its most vulnerable. Teddy’s voice carries heartbreak with strength — every note feels lived in, every line honest. It’s the kind of performance that reminds you why soul music connects so deeply: it tells the truth, no matter how hard it hits.
What stands out most here is the emotion in restraint — the way Teddy holds a phrase just long enough for you to feel it. It’s a masterclass in control and power, and one of the reasons his records never fade.
Follow Sunday Soul for more moments like this — music that reminds us how timeless emotion sounds on vinyl.

Wedding speeches can be some of the most powerful moments of the day – or the point where the room quietly switches off.

When I’m MC’ing, I’m not just pressing play on the next track. I’m looking at where speeches sit in the flow of the day, how long each one runs, and how the order will feel for your guests.

For most weddings, a simple structure works best: host to welcome everyone in, parents or key family, the couple, then one trusted friend to close. Keep each speech focused, keep them while the room is warm, and the emotion lands without losing energy.

On the day, I’ll quietly brief your speakers, manage the handovers and timings, and keep the room with you from first word to last toast.

Save this for your planning, and if you’d like a calm, confident MC on your side, the link’s in my bio.

Moments Of Magic

Stepping in for the MC
There was a last-minute change: the couple’s friend who was meant to MC pulled out hours before the wedding.
Without hesitation, I stepped in.
Introductions. Toasts. Cake cutting. First dance. Seamless.
They later said, "We never felt like anything went wrong. It was like you were meant to do it all along."
That’s the magic of experience, and of being ready to hold more than just the mic.

What I’ve learnt:
– Preparation creates confidence.
– Being adaptable is part of the job.
– Sometimes, being the backup plan becomes the best plan.

Much love,
Alan

A wedding day isn’t just a list of moments. It’s how those moments move together.

One of the tools I use is a “turnaround cue” — a simple light or music change that quietly tells everyone, “something’s about to happen.”

Instead of guests drifting back in ones and twos, the room resets in one clean beat. Everyone returns together, the energy is focused, and the next moment – speeches, first dance or opening the floor – actually lands.

At Celebrations with Alan Marshall, I build cues like this into the timeline so the day feels calm, connected, and intentional from start to finish.

“Professional, warm, and endlessly supportive.”

It’s a privilege to support events with heart.
For this charity ball at Utilita Bowl, I worked alongside the organisers from first planning to last song — shaping the flow, holding the space, and making the night feel effortless.

Whether it's a wedding, fundraiser or party, the goal is the same:
✨ Flow. Confidence. Connection.

Thank you to the Type 1 Takeover team for trusting me with such a special night.

The room reveal isn’t just a nice photo moment — it’s your guests’ first impression of the celebration space.

Handled well, it sets the tone. Slows people down. Signals “something special starts here.”

It’s also a gift to your suppliers — a chance to reset the atmosphere, prep in peace, and allow the space to speak before the music takes over.

Whether you want a grand entrance or something more subtle, I help couples make these transitions feel natural and intentional.

This week’s Sunday Soul is Odyssey – Native New Yorker.
Released in 1977, it’s pure city soul — elegant, reflective, and full of that late-70s New York shimmer. From the first sax line, it captures the rhythm of the streets: the pace, the dreams, the quiet pride of being exactly who you are.

It’s soul with sophistication — a track that glides more than it grooves. Every spin feels like a window into a different time, when records told stories about identity, independence, and belonging.

Follow Sunday Soul each week for more 45s that remind us how music connects people, places, and moments. What song takes you straight back to a time or place that still feels alive?

Your wedding day isn’t one long, endless “high” — it’s a series of energy waves.

I plan your evening in focused blocks so attention doesn’t drift and guests don’t burn out. That first post-dinner window is where we hit key moments and lift the room. Then we switch it up: new tempo, new tone, new hook.

When you build in resets instead of just extending the same mood, the result is simple: guests stay engaged, right through to the last track.

A fluid wedding is a memorable one.

My Moments of Magic

Andy & Anjunadeep

Not every couple wants crowd-pleasers and chart-toppers.

Andy and Jen requested a fully mixed, 4-hour Melodic House set, with no cheese and no requests, just the music they loved.

It was a challenge. And I loved every second of it.

Blending tracks with intention. Building a set that flowed and lifted and moved people, even those who didn’t know the genre. The feedback? Electric. Even the photographers were raving.

What I’ve learnt:

– Trust allows creativity to shine.

– When music is true to you, it becomes unforgettable.

– A niche request isn’t a limitation—it’s an invitation to go deeper.

Much love,

Alan

You can’t keep the dancefloor full if you lose people at dinner.

Every wedding flows in waves — and a great DJ doesn’t just ride them, they guide them. That’s where sound design and MC work matter most. I plan music and micro-moments to gently shift the room from relaxed to recharged — so when the beat drops, it lands.

It’s not hype. It’s timing, tone, and trust.
