As the clocks creep back and Ashby's evenings get darker earlier, it's worth a quick reset on how we look out for each other on a night out.

🔦 It's darker sooner, so plan your route home while there's still light to check it
🚶 Stick to the main streets, Market Street, Bath Street, Station Road, they're well lit for a reason

The night out isn't over till you're home safe. Keep your wits about you, know where you're going, and don't leave people behind.

A few reminders that actually matter:

👀 Keep an eye on your drink. Always
🚶 Walk in groups where you can, especially late
📍 Share your location with someone you trust
🚕 Book a proper taxi, not a random one that pulls up
🔋 Charge your phone before you head out. Dead battery, bad idea
🤝 If a mate looks off, don't just walk away
🏠 Text someone when you're home

Our pubs, restaurants, cafes, hotels, leisure venues, nightclubs and many more, are at the heart of our communities. From a day out with your kids to a night out with friends, hospitality brings people together.

They bring people together and bring life to our cities, towns and villages, but they're under huge pressure from rising costs.

In the UK, you pay one of the highest VAT rates in Europe. 20% extra in VAT for your meal out or stay away. In France, Spain and Italy, it's 10%. In Germany? 7%.

Our message to Government is simple. Let's stand together to say VAT at 10% is fair for hospitality.

If you're out in Ashby and notice something that doesn’t seem quite right — someone looking uncomfortable, vulnerable, unwell or in need of help — don’t ignore it.

🥃 A great night out starts with looking after yourself and the people you're with.

If you leave your drink unattended—even for a moment—it's safest to get a new one. Never accept drinks from someone you don't know or trust, and if something doesn't seem right, trust your instincts.

A few simple tips:
🥤 Keep your drink with you at all times.
👀 Watch your drink being made if you can.
❌ Don't accept drinks from strangers.
👥 Look out for your friends and encourage them to do the same.
🚨 If you feel unwell or think your drink has been tampered with, tell a member of staff immediately.
