A fresh bite for the Dexters today…

Don’t be fooled by how serene they look, moments before this video they were racing me to the open gate into another field that I didn’t want them to go in.. no I didn’t check the gates beforehand.. but they had it lined up in their sights as soon they heard that gate latch open 🤣

Anyway, this time.. I won 🏃‍♀️ 🙌 Helen: 1 Dexters: 0

I’m sure by morning they will have made a new hole into said forbidden field just to spite me but for today the victory is mine! 🤣

Well this wasn’t a part of the suckler herd plan…

My dad always used to say when you have livestock there’ll be deadstock too…

Not a phrase that I’m fond of and even less so this past weekend… We found this little one’s mum very unwell on Sunday morning and despite our best efforts and that of our amazing vet, sadly the outcome was not a good one…

So here we have Belinda (my kids HATE the name 🤣) who appears to have settled into orphan life pretty well, so I guess that’s one blessing of the past few days…

Now to kid myself for the next 2 years that we absolutely won’t be keeping her 👀👀🤣🤣

From the driest Summer on record for decades to this…

The Dexter’s are not coping well…

And they call themselves a native breed 😆

New Bird Flu rules now in place in England…

Housing measures to protect poultry & captive birds from are now in place across the whole of England.

It is now a legal requirement for all keepers in England with over 50 birds or keepers of fewer than 50 who sell or give away , or to house their birds and follow stringent biosecurity measures.

Keeping your birds undercover away from wild birds is vital to minimise the risk of them becoming infected with avian influenza by wild birds.

It remains essential that you follow strict biosecurity measures to reduce the risk of disease spreading to your birds.

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory biosecurity measures is also in force across Great Britain.

Tell me you keep bottle lambs without actually telling me….

It’s time to fence the winter paddocks for the livery side of the business, obviously I couldn’t do it without my fence nibbling helpers 👀

They are meant to be eating up the surplus apples, but spend more time nibbling my fencing supplies instead…

Gadgets not only help make the jobs efficient but also keep the kids keen 😂

No one on this farm is a lover of electric fencing, but sometimes it’s necessary… this little wheelbarrow has been a game changer… although they have already asked if we can upgrade it to one that fits on a quad bike 🤣

If we had more electric fencing to do then it would definitely be worth the investment… but for now they will have to make do with the barrow!
